Getting Started

Press a key at the title screen, then select New Game from the menu that appears. Next, choose the difficulty level that best fits your level of experience. Choose a name and codename for your agent by typing inside the text windows on the left side of the screen. Click the arrows next to your agent's picture to change his appearance, then click OK when you're ready to begin your first mission.

Movement

After a brief cut scene, you'll be taken to a harbor in the dead of night. This is where you'll discuss the objectives of your mission with a fellow agent, but first, you'll need to find him! Press the arrow keys to walk in any direction, and move the mouse to look around; this will come in handy later for aiming at distant targets. Once you've found the agent, he will offer you three options; click the option you prefer to receive a weapon that best fits your playing style.

Combat

Now that you've got a weapon, it's time to put it to good use! Press one of the number keys to select the weapon from your inventory, shown on the bottom of the screen. When the weapon appears in your hands, move the mouse to aim for your target, then click the left mouse button to fire. Remember, most weapons have a limited supply of ammunition (shown as a number next to that weapon's icon in the inventory bar), so make the most of what you've got!

Inventory

As you progress through the game, you'll find items which you will need to complete your mission. To collect them, first use the mouse to look directly at the item, then click the right mouse button to add it to your inventory. Any items you've collected can be accessed with the number keys and used with the left mouse button. For instance, to open a door with a lockpick, first select the item, then walk to the door you wish to unlock and press the left mouse button.

Health

You have a limited supply of health, shown on the top left hand corner of the screen. When you're attacked by enemies, parts of your body will change color to reflect the damage you've taken. If you are struck in the head or torso while those parts of your body are red, your days as a government agent will come to a swift and painful end!

Tip: The Running Man

If the game moves too quickly for you, select Settings in the option menu, then Control, then disable Always Run. Now, you will only run when you hold down the shift key, making the control more precise.

Tip: The Choice is Yours

There's always more than one way to finish a mission in Deus Ex. If one strategy doesn't work for you, try another one -- you're sure to succeed if you're persistent and imaginative.

Tip: Swimming

You can swim, but only for brief periods of time. Use the arrow keys and the mouse to guide yourself through the water. Make sure you frequently come to the surface for air, or you'll take heavy damage or even drown!
