Basics

The goal of Dragster is to race from one side of the screen to the other without blowing out your engine. Dragster always assumes it's a two-player game, so there are always two cars onscreen, but you can race yourself as a "time trial" if you like.

Controls

The Left directional control is a gear shift, and the Gas button puts the pedal down. There is no steering in the normal game mode, just shifting and acceleration. When the countdown begins, you're in Neutral gear (there's an "N" below your car). Press Left to pop the clutch, and when you release the directional control, you'll be in first gear. Hit the Gas to go!

Shifting

You won't get a very good time in your race in first gear. Once you're up to speed, let off the gas and press Left again to shift into second gear, then third, then fourth. In fourth gear, you're at maximum speed, so just keep from blowing out to win!

Blowout!

If you give the engine too much gas, it'll blow out. When the meter turns red, you're at full speed, but also in the danger zone. If the meter gets too full, your engine will fall out and you can't complete the race. Tap the Gas button at lower gears to keep from blowing out; you're safer holding it down for longer periods in third and fourth gear.

Tip: Wheelie

If your car pops up onto its back wheels, you know you're going at maximum speed.
