Overview
DropTeam simulates far-future mechanized combat between greedy interstellar pirate clans and colonists seeking to rebuild galactic civilizations. You'll war across dozens of worlds, commanding your squad of mechanized assault units dropped from orbital bombardiers. Command the entire squad and manipulate overall strategy -- but remember, you're also a grunt on the ground, behind the wheel of your own armor. You must learn to juggle tactical control with fierce real time gun battles.
Gameplay Modes
DropTeam offers two main single player game types. The Campaign is a story-driven series of missions in which you must rise through the ranks of your trade guild's hierarchy by pulling off successful raids and attacks. Standalone games are single-mission battles drawn from the Campaign, in which you customize your forces and play a one-off battle, vying for multiple objectives. We recommend starting with the Campaign; the missions are a little more straightforward and forgiving of newcomers.
Gunnery Control
Half of DropTeam is spent in combat view -- a third person perspective in which you control a piece of armor and engage enemies with your team. In general the controls work like a first person shooter -- WASD to accelerate and steer, mouse to "look" and shoot. DropTeam adds a level of complexity by decoupling the mouse-controlled targeting reticule from the orientation of your tank. Acceleration, terrain and planetary conditions like gravity can also affect the handling of your vehicle.
Tactical Control
The other half of DropTeam is tactical. As group commander, you're responsible for giving orders to the rest of your squad. Everything from movement to engagement orders are handled on the tactical map (accessed with the spacebar). Left and right click on teammates to bring up order menus, select the orders you wish to give and click targets on the map. You must depend on your squad in DropTeam, so mastering the tactical map is imperative. You can also take control of any unit from this view.
Standalone Missions
Standalone missions are based on campaign missions, but are infinitely customizable, and include three primary gametypes. In Objective, one team defends and the other attacks a strategically valuable area. In Territory, both sides try to take control of neutral areas. Finally, Capture the Flag is a running gun battle in which you each score points by capturing and returning the opposition's marker. Set map, team sizes and deployment time in the setup menu, then start the game.
Tip: Pedal to the Metal
"W" doesn't mean "forward" so much as "accelerate." The longer you hold it down, the faster you go, until you reach the vehicle's max speed. At top speed it's much easier to flip or lose control, so go easy on the gas unless you're in a real hurry.
Tip: Look Left
The Component Status Panel on the left side of the screen details your tank's various subsystems and components. As you take damage, the green lights will turn yellow, and then red, possibly resulting in function loss.
Tip: Down Scope
Sometimes it's hard to get a precise shot off in the traditional third person view. To deal with distant enemies, hold the E key to switch to Gunnery View, a first person camera that gives you more precise control. It's hard to steer in this view mode, though, so use it sparingly.
Tip: Calling All Cars
If you need to replenish your ammunition or summon some reinforcements, you can call in various dropships with supplies. Choose a nice flat plain for the drop and hit the appropriate command (Ctrl-R calls an ammo drop, for example), then wait for the cavalry. Don't do this too close to an enemy, or the dropship will get shot down.
Tip: Mind Control
Remember that you can possess anyone on your team from the tactical view, then switch back to combat with the spacebar to control their vehicle. This is useful if yours is destroyed or if you want to handle something complicated yourself.
Tip: It's Custom
You can change the default keyboard controls in the main game interface. This is also a useful place to review the many default keyboard commands.
