Basics

The basic gameplay in Extreme PaintBrawl is to shoot the opposing team with paint pellets, knocking them out of play. As with standard paintball rules, one direct hit is a confirmed knockout. While different modes such as Capture the Flag and Gauntlet have slightly different gameplay objectives, the basic goal is to rack up hits.

Movement

Movement is handled via traditional first-person controls. Press the W or Up arrow key to move forward, S or Down arrow key to move backward, and the A and D or Left and Right arrow keys to strafe left and right. The mouse is used to aim your weapon, as well as to turn and look in any direction. In addition, you can press the Space Bar to jump and the Control key to crouch.

Controls

In addition to the movement controls, there are a host of action controls you can perform. To fire, press the left mouse button. To use your scope and zoom in and out, press the Z key. To reload your weapon, press the R key. To throw a paint grenade, press the G key.

Tactics

Since this is a squad-based game and you are playing with a team of computer-controlled teammates, you can give them specific commands during a match. To give a teammate an order, press the 1 key on the Number Pad to pull up the Tactics Map. Use your mouse to click on each teammate on the map and then click on one of the commands listed along the left side of the screen. Commands include: Move, Assault, Patrol, Defend, and Follow.

Gameplay Modes

Extreme PaintBrawl 4 offers a choice of two different game types. Instant Action throws you right into a quick match where you choose the level and game mode. Tournament allows you to create and outfit your own team and then work your way through a series of matches, from qualifiers to the nationals. As you progress in this mode, you will earn cash prizes that you can use to purchase new equipment, outfits and players.

Tip: Sneak Peek

Before entering into a battle, you can choose to "Walk the Field" and scout out the playfield. This allows you to get a lay of the land, as well as find good spots for tactical maneuvers, such as sniping and ambush points.

Tip: Skill Points

As you play through the Tournament mode, not only will you earn money, you also get Skill Points that can be applied to you and your teammates. Make sure to distribute earned Skill Points in between matches.

Tip: Guard Your Flag

When playing Capture the Flag, it's always a good idea to leave one or two team members behind to defend your base. To do so, pull up the Tactics Map, select the team members you want to defend by clicking on them, and then click on the Defend command.

Tip: Adjusting Your Aim

Paintballs differ from real bullets in their weight and consistency. As such, their range is much shorter. When targeting from a distance, make sure you compensate for this by adjusting your aim higher.
