Basics

In Full Spectrum Warrior: Ten Hammers, you will control several US Army squads in the fictional but oddly familiar wartorn country of Zekistan. As a tactical simulation, FSW: TH is not like run and gun style military games. In order to succeed, you will have to control your squads carefully, moving slowly and making use of strategic maneuvers to eliminate enemy threats without exposing your squad members to danger.

Basic Controls

Movement and shooting are not handled directly in FSW: TH. To move, click the right mouse button to bring up the move cursor. Move the cursor with your mouse to the location you want your squad to go, then hit the left mouse button. To fire, click the left mouse button to bring up the aim cursor, move the cursor over the enemy, and left click again. Your squad will automatically begin firing at any enemies in that area. You can aim with the precision fire key E, but doing so will expose you to greater risk of enemy fire. To throw a grenade, hold down the left mouse button, move the mouse to select the type of grenade, then move the mouse to select direction and distance, then release to throw. To cancel any action, hit the Spacebar.

Squad Control

Each squad consists of 4 members, the team leader, the grenadier, the automatic gunner, and the rifleman, and each member has special skills. For example, the auto gunner can lay down suppressive fire while the rest of the squad flanks around the enemy. At the lower left corner of the screen, you will be able to see which team member is selected. To change to a different member, you can use the W (Team Leader), A (grenadier), S (rifleman), and D (auto gunner) keys. You can split your squad by holding the right mouse button. If you are controlling multiple squads, you can use Tab to switch between them.

Contextual Controls

Many more advanced actions are controlled through contextual menus. For example, to carry an injured squad member, you will need to right click to bring up the cursor, then hold the left mouse button to bring up a menu, then move the mouse to select Pick Up. Try holding down the left and right mouse buttons while playing to see all of your options, as these will change depending on the situation.

Tip: Tactics

Taking down the enemy in an urban warfare setting is not going to be easy. You certainly won't be able to just charge the bad guys and hope to come away untouched. Instead, be sure to make use of all your abilities as a squad. Try splitting the squad up and flanking the enemy, or take the high ground to deny them cover, or use smoke grenades to blind them. Your success will depend on your ability to think strategically about your situation and react accordingly.

Tip: Situational Awareness

Just because your mission objective is 150 meters west doesn't mean you should tell your squad to head in that direction straight away. To avoid putting your squad at risk, you will need to move very slowly from cover point to cover point, and at each stop, try to notice any location along the way that could be the site of an enemy ambush. If you are unsure about a particular direction, try going a different way to see if there is a safer route. If this is not an option, plan a path that will minimize enemy sightlines to you, so you are not caught under fire in the open.
