Missions
To earn your keep and build your reputation in the country, you will need to run missions for the various factions in the country. You may be tasked with killing a group of soldiers from the other side, for example, or with destroying supplies. Completing these missions will earn you diamonds to spend and raise your reputation. There are also side missions available from a variety of sources, such as the Underground peace movement, the gun shop owners, or fellow mercenaries. Your map will mark the locations of the missions available to you at any time.
Driving
It's a big country, and walking from place to place wouldn't get you very far. Luckily, there are plenty of cars, jeeps, and other vehicles available for the taking. The GPS in your car will show you directions to your next mission, and signposts on the road will change color to mark the way. Don't worry too much if you lose your current vehicle, as you can generally find another one fairly quickly. However, if you would prefer to keep your vehicle, you will need to keep it in good repair. If smoke is coming out of the hood, you will need to get out of the car and repair it manually. You should also keep an eye out for vehicles with weaponry, as this can make a big difference if you run into enemies on the road.
Buddies
In your travels, you may meet a few friendly faces, generally other mercenaries, willing to help you out. These buddies can provide you with information, give you new missions or new ways to do your current mission, and even rescue you if you fall in battle. Be aware, however, that your buddies are only human. If they get hurt, you will need to heal them using one of your own syrettes. If they die, they won't be coming back.
Tip: Diamonds are a Merc's Best Friend
Besides the diamonds you get paid for completing missions, you can also find caches of diamonds hidden throughout the countryside. Luckily, your GPS is equipped with a tracker that can locate these caches. If the tracker begins to blink green, you are near one. The faster the tracker blinks, the closer you are. If the tracker goes solid green, you are heading in the right direction. If you get very close, the tracker will make noise to let you know that you're there.
Tip: Fire Away
In dry areas, you can use Molotov cocktails or the flare gun to start brushfires that will spread quickly. You can use the fire to hold enemies at bay, flush them out of hiding, or just roast them where they stand. Be careful though, fire doesn't take sides.
Weapons
You can carry 3 weapons at a time, a pistol or other small weapon, a large weapon like an assault rifle or shotgun, and a special weapon, such as an RPG, plus a knife and some grenades. If you run out of ammo or want to change weapons, you can pick up weapons from your enemies. However, these weapons are old and unreliable, and may jam on you in the middle of a firefight. To avoid this, you will want to buy new weapons from the gun shops scattered throughout the country. You can also purchase various upgrades to your weapons and other abilities at these shops. Once you have bought a new weapon, there will be an infinite supply of that weapon available to you in perfect condition at the shop.
Health
Your health is indicated by the bar at the bottom left of the screen. If you take damage in combat and then get out of danger for a while, your health will partially regenerate. To heal completely, you will need to sleep at a safe house, find a bottle of water, or use a syrette. Syrettes can be found in health kits in many locations, and you should try to keep an eye out for them whenever possible. You can use one in combat at the push of a button to heal yourself back up to full. If you fall into the red zone of your health bar, you will need to perform some impromptu surgery to fix yourself quickly, or you will die. Besides the danger provided by bullets, you are also afflicted with a serious case of malaria that you will need to keep under control with medication. When you get dizzy and the screen blurs, you will need to pop an anti-malaria pill to get back on your feet again. To get the proper medicine, you will need to run Underground missions.
Tip: Safe Houses
There are plenty of small houses and camps in the country that can be used as safe houses for you to rest or store your weapons. If they are shown on the map with a lock, this means that there are other mercenaries there first, and you will have to clear them out before you can move in yourself.
Tip: Public Transportation
Bus stations are an excellent way to travel if you need to go a considerable distance. Just drive to the nearest station and choose which other station you want to go to. You will be transported there instantly.
Tip: Save Anywhere
Though there are traditional save points available in the game, the PC version of Far Cry 2 allows you to save at any time.
