Basics
Far Cry is a first-person shooter set in the gorgeous islands of the South Pacific. As Jack Carver, you'll have to stealthily make your way across the island, shooting or evading any mercenaries who cross your path, to find out why your boat was blown up and mercenaries are after you. The first section of the game is a tutorial, so you'll have a chance to get used to moving around before things heat up.
Stealth
The enemy mercenaries don't automatically know where you are; they'll only attack when they see you. Stay in the undergrowth and use the crouch [Ctrl] and prone [v] commands to sneak around without making noise. While this isn't a "stealth" game -- there are no sections where you're forced to avoid notice -- things are much easier if you can get the drop on those mercs.
Controls
The game will generally tell you how to move and act the first time you get into a situation requiring a new control feature. But sometimes the game refers to the "item button" or "prone button" without telling you what that button is. A quick list: [v] lets you lie prone, [Shift] makes Jack sprint, [Page Up] and [Page Down] or the mouse wheel will cycle through your weapons, [j] drops a weapon, and [g] throws grenades or rocks.
Items
Occasionally you'll find items, such as keycards, lying around the island. Once you've picked them up, you can press [f] to activate the item. In the case of a keycard, you'll swipe the card through a reader, usually to unlock a door or something similar.
Vehicles
To drive a vehicle, walk up to it and press [f] to hop into the driver's seat. Driving the vehicle is much like walking around, except that the vehicle can't strafe. Nearly every vehicle has a mounted turret or machine gun, so you can still attack foes while behind the wheel. But driving and aiming at the same time takes practice!
Tip: Reconnaissance
Early in the game, you'll find a pair of binoculars. These have a special sensor inside that picks up on any mercenaries in the area, highlighting them in a reticule whether they're in direct sight or not. To bring the binocs up to your eyes, press [b]; zoom in and out with [+] and [-] or the mouse wheel. Later you'll find better goggles that you can put on with [t], and a flashlight you can activate with [l].
Tip: Rock On
If you have no grenades, the [g] button will throw rocks. These don't hurt anything, but they do make some noise when they hit the ground. Use them to distract the mercenaries so you can sneak past. If you have grenades, switch between them and rocks with [h].
Tip: Careful Aim
Press the right mouse button to bring your weapon to bear and look through the sights. This makes hitting a distant target a little easier. If your weapon has a sight scope -- a sniper rifle, for instance -- you can adjust the scope with [+] and [-] or the mouse wheel.
