Tutorial

Stronghold Deluxe is a game of Medieval settlement management and warfare. You're responsible for building castles, maintaining surrounding villages and bringing war to your enemies -- all while keeping your own people happy and your kingdom healthy. To learn the game's controls, select the tutorial option in the main menu. This will guide you through the basics of construction and unit control while leaving a lot of opportunity for experimentation available.

Campaigns

Stronghold Deluxe includes two campaigns -- one military, one economic. Your mission objectives in each will focus on the type of campaign, but it's still necessary to maintain a military in the economic campaign and keep your economy flowing in the military one. The early levels of both campaigns help supplement the tutorial: there is a lot of margin for error early on and you're encouraged to experiment with the various structures and policies available in the game.

Warfare

At least half of the game is devoted to combat -- not only must you ensure that your settlement is run properly, you must also raise and maintain an army with which to defend your own territory and conquer that of others. Economics and warfare are intertwined, so it's important that you don't embark on a campaign without enough money -- and, of course, that you don't focus entirely on economic growth to the detriment of your military capability.

Settlement Management

When you're not at war, you need to gather resources and expand your settlement in order to produce the necessary military units and repel enemies. Your peasants require food and employment, while your own political aims will call for increasingly sophisticated military structures along with various technological improvements. A significant portion of this game is devoted to castle-building -- walls, towers, moats and so forth -- all of which ties directly in to the combat.

Tip: Happiness

Your challenge is to keep tax income high without antagonizing your citizens. The best way to maintain high taxes and high happiness is to provide the people with extra rations, churches or taverns.

Tip: Trebuchets

The mighty trebuchet is the ultimate piece of siege weaponry -- far more devastating than a mere catapult. Be sure to build as many of these devices as you can afford!

Tip: Pitch

You can lay down pitch and ignite it -- a very useful defense, especially against tight crowds of enemy soldiers.

Tip: Moats

Castle moats won't stop an army on their own, but they're a great way to slow the enemy down long enough for you to organize your own defenses.
