Flight Control
When in your ship, you will see four flight options at the top of the screen. The first is Free Flight. To fly your ship, hold the left mouse button and then drag in the direction you want to go. You can also change this to direct movement by hitting the spacebar. To fire your weapons, click the right mouse button. You can control your shipâ¿¿s speed with your mousewheel, strafe with A/D, stop your engines with X, or hit Tab to kick in your afterburners. The second option on your flight bar is Go-To, an autopilot that will fly you to the targeted location or waypoint. The third is dock, and is used to land on planets or to access jump gates and trade lanes. The fourth is to join formation with a targetted ship. Lastly, you can choose cruise mode from either Free or Go-To modes, or by hitting Shift-W. You will travel much faster, but will have no weapons.
HUD
Your ship also has other information available to you on your HUD. In the bottom left, you will see targeting information about the other ships and bases in the vicinity. To the bottom right, you will see your weapon information. In the bottom middle, you will see three bars representing your weapon energy, shields, and hull, respectively. At the top right, you will have options to open your log, map, inventory, character screen, and other information.
Planets
When not on your ship, you will see five options at the top of your screen to show you the things you can do at the current planet or base. First is the launchpad, where you can leave back to space. Next is the Bar icon. At the bar, you can check the job board, watch the galactic news, or talk to people to find jobs, listen to rumors, or improve your reputation. The third is the Trade icon, where you can buy and sell various commodities. Next is the equipment dealer, to improve your shipâ¿¿s weapons and systems. Finally, the ship dealer will sell you new and better ships.
Making Money
There are many ways to make money is in the Freelancer universe. The simplest is to take various jobs, usually combat missions, for cash. You can also buy a cargo freighter and buy and sell your way around. You also have the option of mining various asteroid fields for sellable material. Also, ships you kill will often drop loot that you can collect and resell. After clearing out your enemies, hit the B key to tractor in any loot within range.
Equipment
There is a wide variety of upgrades available, both in terms of ship equipment and in the ships themselves. Be careful when purchasing to be sure that you are a high enough level to use a given item, that your ship has enough hardpoints for it, and that you are picking the right item for your playstyle. If you go into combat in a mining ship, for example, you may not last long. However, you wonâ¿¿t be able to avoid pirates forever, so be sure to stay armed no matter what ship you fly. For your starter ship, you will likely want to upgrade your lasers, add a third weapon, and improve your shields as soon as you have the cash.
Tip: Repair
Your ship can carry two special kinds of equipment called nanobots and shield batteries. The nanobots are activated with the G key and will repair your hull. The shield batteries are activated with the F key and will restore your shield. These can make the difference between life and death in a difficult dogfight, so try to keep as many on you as your ship will hold. Be aware that it may take more than 1 to restore your ship to full.
Tip: Reputation
There are many different organizations in the galaxy, ranging from governments to pirates to corporations, and each will have its own opinion of you. While itâ¿¿s not necessary (or even possible) to get everyone to love you, you will need to raise your reputation with a given group before they will offer you missions or information. Raising your rep with one group may lower your rep with that groupâ¿¿s enemies, so choose your friends carefully.
