Gameplay

Freeway is extremely easy to play. Use the game select key to choose one of the eight game difficulties, each representing a different freeway and time of day. You can play alone, or with a second player controlling another chicken simultaneously. Your goal is to get from your side of the road -- the bottom in the game's top-down view -- across to the other side, on the top. When you succeed, you start again with the next chicken.

Basics

The goal of Freeway is to get your chicken across all ten lanes of traffic as many times as possible within the time limit for each game -- two minutes, 16 seconds.

Challenges

But here's the game's twist: you can move up and down, but you can't move left and right! This makes Freeway much more challenging than another famous animal-crosses-the-road game, because you have to predict traffic patterns. The good news is: if you're struck by a car, you don't get squashed into a chicken patty. You're just driven back a number of lanes, which can seriously mess up your strategy.

Tip: Start Slow

Get the feel of the controls by playing through game difficulty 1 a few times. This will help you get used to your chicken's handling and responsiveness. When you're ready for a bigger challenge, try the higher difficulty levels.

Tip: Traffic

Learn to anticipate traffic patterns. This is the key to successful freeway crossing, and the reason games five through eight are so challenging -- since the traffic speed in each lane increases and decreases randomly, only a true master can use every moment and opening to his or her advantage!

Tip: Clusters

Vehicle clusters in each lane travel at more or less the same speed. This will help you anticipate openings and overall traffic patterns.
