Basic Training

Even if you're used to real-time strategy games, newcomers to G.I. Combat should go through the Basic Training tutorials to learn the controls. This game can be somewhat challenging to control if you're unfamiliar with it, though it does bear a lot of general similarities to most 3D real-time strategy games. There are several tutorial scenarios to play, grouped under Basic Training in the main menu. Each scenario will introduce you to a new interface command concept.

Basics

G.I. Combat: Battle of Normandy is an innovative 3D real-time strategy game that puts you in command of a unit of American marines on Omaha Beach, just after D-Day. Through a series of objective-based missions, you and your troops must push ever deeper into occupied France, liberating Europe from the clutches of the Nazi army. Like the Allied invaders, you'll need to master the art of tank and small-unit warfare in a hectic, complex battlezone unlike any other in the history of warfare.

Gameplay Modes

There are three game types available in G.I. Combat. Battles are for quick play, and are not connected to a larger story or sequence. Operations are two or three battles strung together, usually with multiple objectives spread across each. Your surviving troops carry over from battle to battle in an Operation. Campaigns are several battles tied together, but they're not played out in linear order -- your path through the battles of a Campaign is determined by your success or failure.

Units

G.I. Combat includes a huge selection of troop types: a variety of infantry units, support personnel, mortar crews, heavy armor and much more are all available. The Task Force screen appears before the start of any game type, allowing you to review the units in your company and familiarize yourself with their capabilities. In some custom scenarios, you're given points that you can spend toward the purchase of additional units to further strengthen your company.

Scenario Editor

You can modify existing game scenarios or even create entirely new ones from scratch with the included Scenario Editor. The editor allows you to customize a battle map, place victory locations, adjust cover and starting points. You can also set up custom companies for each side of the battle, and add extra purchase points to either side so players can further customize their units before entering the fray. Save your custom scenarios and play them whenever you like.

Tip: Terrain

The terrain is very important in G.I. Combat -- you can use it to your advantage, and ignore it at your peril. Forests, hills, urban areas and of course Normandy's famous hedgerows all offer unique benefits and challenges to your company.

Tip: Victory Locations

Victory locations are points on the map that your side must control in order to win the battle. Both sides have their own victory locations, though in many cases they're in the same place, leading to some severe firefights.

Tip: Morale

Your soldiers have a morale level that changes based on a number of factors, including overall battle success, numbers, casualties and so forth. Frightened soldiers may flee or surrender, and if you order your people to do something that's obviously suicidal, they may refuse.

Tip: Armor

Take full advantage of any armor in your company. Tanks have good artificial intelligence and can generally be trusted to do the right thing in the heat of battle. Your infantry can often find good cover behind stationary tanks.
