Enemy Tractor Beam
Occasionally your enemy will deploy a tractor beam that will capture your ship if it makes contact. Never fear, however: as long as you have remaining ships, you can retrieve a hostage. When your captured ship becomes part of a dive-bomb attack, destroy the alien that’s paired with it. Your once-lost ship returns to you at the bottom of the screen, giving you double the firepower. Remember, though: if you lose your final ship to the tractor beam, your game is over.
Basics
Your overall goal is simple: destroy every alien and move on to the next level. Use your joystick or directional pad to move your ship from left to right along the bottom of the screen. This will allow you to position yourself to cause maximum damage while avoiding enemy bullets. To fire, press the action button.
Challenging Stage
Every three levels, you will face a bonus round, called the Challenging Stage. In these rounds, the enemies will not try to destroy you. Instead, your goal is to shoot down 40 alien in a very short amount of time. They will fly in formation, so stay alert! Destroy all 40 for a hefty 10,000-point perfect bonus.
Tip: Aim for the Galaga
Eventually the Aliens will dive-bomb your ship, sometimes in formation. During their descent, receive a point bonus by destroying the big aliens on the top row.
Tip: Desperation
You may lose a ship if it gets caught in an Alien tractor beam, but you still have a chance to destroy your captor and escape. While spinning in the tractor beam, keep firing: you may hit your attacker and save yourself.
Tip: Oops
When trying to rescue a captured ship, be careful not to destroy it with your own missiles!
Tip: U-Turns
Always pay careful attention to dive-bombing Galagans. After they pass you by, some of them will pull a U-turn, flying back up the screen to destroy you from behind.
