Powerups
The armies of evil are powerful, but Arthur isn't helpless. He begins his journey with an endless supply of lances which he can throw at foes. There are other weapons to be acquired as well, including torches and daggers. Once you collect a weapon, you will keep it even after you die.
Basics
Players take control of Arthur, a brave knight whose beloved Princess Prin Prin has been kidnapped by the forces of darkness. Arthur's task is to journey through six stages into the underworld to defeat Satan and rescue the princess.
Controls
Arthur can run left and right with the directional keys, climb ladders by pressing up when standing in front of them, and leap over enemies with the jump button. In many areas of the game, you'll need to jump over pits and other hazards to proceed. Shoot with the Fire button.
Enemies
At the end of each stage is a boss (sometimes two) who must be defeated before you can advance to the next area. Bosses are extremely powerful and can absorb up to a dozen attacks, making the end of each level a real fight. Additionally, you'll frequently encounter unusually tough enemies along the way to add to the stress. The most notorious is the flying Red Arimer, who can make short work of your journey.
Armor
Arthur begins his adventure with a suit of armor, but it's awfully flimsy stuff -- it will only protect him from a single enemy attack before falling to pieces. Once your armor is gone, Arthur will have to face his foes wearing nothing but his boxers. Even if he doesn't die of embarrassment in this condition, a single enemy attack will do him in!
Hazards
There are many ways to lose in Ghosts 'N Goblins. Besides the hazards posed by bad guys, you must also avoid plummeting into bottomless pits. Furthermore, each area of the game is timed -- dawdle and you'll lose a life. Once you defeat the final boss, Satan, a new quest begins...
Tip: Extra Armor
Even if you lose your armor, you might luck out and find a replacement suit. But don't count on it -- they're hard to come by. Your best bet is to play smart and avoid getting hit in the first place.
Tip: Monster-In-A-Box
The bosses at the end of each stage can withstand up to a dozen attacks, which means Arthur will go down a lot faster than they will. Keep your distance when you reach their hangout and try to attack them as much as possible before they begin moving.
Tip: Do-Overs
Whatever you do, don't shoot a gravestone fifteen times. Seriously, we're not kidding. It's a bad idea.
