Getting Started
When you begin Golden Axe, you'll need to choose a character. Select between Axe Battler the Barbarian, Tyris Flare the Amazon or Gilius Thunderhead the Dwarf. All three characters essentially control the same, but each has a different balance of physical attack and magic power. The dwarf has the highest attack rating but the lowest magic rating. The Amazon has a low attack rating but a high magic rating, and the barbarian has an even mix of the two.
Controls
The controls are simple: move, jump and attack. You also have a magic command for casting spells. Press the attack button in sequence for a series of slashes, or get up close and personal to grab your opponent. You can also press jump and attack together for a more powerful move that takes longer to execute. Double-tapping in either direction will allow you to run and perform dash attacks.
Advanced Techniques
Keep an eye out for bad guys on monsters...knock 'em off their saddle and jack their ride. Also look for meat snacks to rejuvenate health and blue potions to refill your magic power. Remember that Golden Axe was originally an arcade game, and thus designed to eat your quarters. It's tough! But its hack-n-slash gameplay is a blast. Grab a friend and play co-op for even more fun. One question still remains: why does Ax-Battler fight with a sword? The world may never know.
Tip: Magic
Remember to save your magic for when you really need it. You won't get refills very often as the game progresses.
Tip: Special Attacks
Your special attacks and jump attacks are considerably more powerful than regular attacks, so master them and use them as much as you can.
Tip: Thieves
Thieves will sneak in and steal your stuff between levels. Hit them as many times as you can before they exit the screen to get as much back as possible.
