Basics
Gore: Ultimate Soldier is a first person shooter that takes you back to the heady days when action was fast, enemies were plentiful, and story was totally irrelevant. Don't worry about MOB and its war with the government, or about the Meat Machine and its ability to train super soldiers with veteran-level skills. What matters is that you have a gun (22, actually), and that you have the tools and technology to point those guns at your enemies and blast them off the screen. Simple and satisfying.
Stamina
A unique addition to the world of Gore is stamina, which drains rapidly if you sprint too much, spend too much time in the water or hop around like a kangaroo. If your stamina falls too low, you'll have to stop and wheeze for a while, or even black out from the strain. You'll come to quickly enough, and stamina does recharge provided you relax for a second or two, but losing consciousness in the midst of a big firefight is an almost sure way to wind up a notch on the butt of someone else's gun.
Controls
If you've ever played a first person shooter -- heck, if you've ever watched anyone play a first person shooter -- you won't have any trouble with Gore. This game's mouse-and-keyboard controls are identical to that found in most shooters, and as usual you can customize controls to your heart's content in the options menu. Gore is a simple shooter, having more in common with Serious Sam or Quake than with Deus Ex, but "easily learned" isn't the same as "easily mastered." Winning takes skill.
Weapons and Armor
Gore offers a full 22 weapons to collect, from your usual shotguns and assault rifles to fancy laser beams and electrical blasters. Add grenades into the pile and you have what can only be described as an "embarrassment of riches" in terms of ways to kill your foes. Armor, meanwhile, is function-specific, meaning it actually protects the part of the body that it's meant to. Cooler still, if you concentrate fire on the armor of an opponent, you can watch it degrade and eventually blow apart.
Tip: Splash Damage
Rockets and grenades still do plenty of damage even if they don't score a direct hit. If your aim leaves something to be desired, these weapons are a great way to get kills through splash damage.
Tip: Armor All
Remember that in Gore, armor actually protects what it claims to -- and nothing else. If someone is wearing body armor but no helmet, shoot them in the head, not the chest.
Tip: Face Me
In later levels, quite a few enemies come at you at once. Avoid switching wildly between lots of targets -- shoot one, stop when he's dead, move on to the next, and so forth.
