Menu Screen
Several options are available to you in the menu screen. Press left and right to select between the available options resting on the revolving table. You can access the options underneath the table by pressing up and down. Finally, once you've found the desired option, press the confirm button to choose it.
Commands
Each command is represented by an icon. To use items in your inventory, select the bag. To equip weapons and armor, choose the sword and shield. To check the status of party members, select the sheet of paper. To cast magic spells or perform special techniques, select the sword and staff. To assign skills to your heroes, select the book. Finally, to teach your characters magic spells and techniques, or to boost the power of previously learned skills, choose the fist.
Friends
As Ryudo journeys to towns and cities, he will find friendly characters, including potential allies. Stand next to them and press the confirm button to begin a conversation with them...continue pressing the confirm button to advance the dialogue. Ryudo will also find items scattered throughout his world. Stand on top of the item and press the confirm button to claim it. It will be added to your inventory and can be accessed later in the menu screen.
Getting Started
Press the confirm button at the title screen. Use the controller to highlight New Game, then press the confirm button once more. After a lengthy introductory sequence, the game begins with the hero, Ryudo, in the center of the screen. Use the controller to move Ryudo in any direction. Press the menu button to pause the game and bring up the menu screen.
Foes
Ryudo and his friends will often come face to face with monsters. These bizarre and dangerous creatures roam the countryside, and are especially plentiful in dungeons and underground passages. Touching a monster will start a battle. You can avoid conflicts by sneaking past the monsters, but if they spot you first, they'll sprint toward you and start a fight whether you want one or not!
Combat
When a fight begins, the combatants will appear on an enclosed playfield. A meter on the bottom of the screen indicates whose turn will be next. When one of your characters is ready to fight, a menu appears above his or her head. Select the "combo" attack to strike enemies multiple times, or the "critical" attack to land a single devastating blow. You can also choose "magic" or "moves" to cast spells and perform special techniques, or "items" to use items in your inventory.
Saving
Fights continue until your party or the monsters are victorious. If Ryudo and his friends have beaten their enemies, they are awarded with experience points and coins. If the monsters have slain your heroes, the game is over and you must restart from a save point. Save points are marked with a rainbow colored cone; step into the cone and press the confirm button to save the game or restore your characters' hit points, magic points and special points.
Melee
After a character has been given an attack command, you will need to specify which monster or monsters the hero will battle. Highlight the monster(s) of your choice and press the confirm button. Your hero will spring into action, running toward the enemy they've chosen to attack. Fights in Grandia II take place in a partially real-time environment, with both the monsters and your heroes interacting between turns.
Tip: Zap!
At the beginning of the game, during the first fight with Millenia, she casts the Zap! spell on Ryudo to paralyze him and the battle ends -- usually. There's a glitch in the game that sometimes prevents Millenia from using Zap! caused by taking the combat tutorial in the Carbo Village Item Shop. If Millenia keeps casting Stram and shooting Ryudo with her crossbow instead of using Zap!, you'll need to restart your game and skip the tutorial.
Tip: Concentration
Casting magic spells requires concentration, for both you and your enemies. If you see an enemy who's about to cast a spell (shining points of light will appear all around it), use a critical attack to break its concentration, saving the other party members from its wrath.
Tip: Distance
Take into account the distance between your heroes and their enemies when you fight. A character's turn may not necessarily end with that hero performing an attack, if their target is too far away to reach.
Tip: Mana Eggs
Equip your characters with mana eggs to grant them the ability to cast magic spells. Your characters will be given different sets of spells depending on the type of mana egg equipped.
Tip: Strategy
Choose your attacks carefully. There's no reason to waste a critical attack on an especially weak enemy. Choose a combo attack instead, so that when your hero slays the monster, he or she will proceed to another nearby foe and strike it as well.
