Basics

In Gunstar Heroes, brothers Red and Blue are on a mission to save their brother Green from the evil Colonel Red. You can play solo, or grab a buddy and play as a cooperative team. The controls are simple: run, jump and shoot. Use another button to change weapons.

Getting Started

At the game's outset, you have the option to select between "Free Shot" and "Fixed Shot". Free Shot allows you to move and shoot at the same time, but you can only shoot in the direction in which you are moving. Fixed Shot allows you to shoot in all eight directions from a fixed position. You must also select one of four primary weapons: Force (rapid fire pulse laser), Lightning (fires through enemies), Chaser (homing bullets) or Fire (flame thrower).

Difficulty

The bosses you will face are beautifully designed and offer just the right amount of challenge. If the game is too easy or totally kicking your butt, Gunstar Heroes offers three difficulty settings. The game unfolds in a somewhat non-linear fashion. There are a total of six stages that you must conquer, although you can tackle the first four in any order you choose.

Advanced Techniques

Weapon powerups can be collected and combined with your primary weapon for awesome hybrid effects. Try your hand at a Lightning gun that homes in on the bad guys, and see how many of your enemies are left standing. Red and Blue have other moves at their disposal as well, including melee kicks and grapple throws. You can also slide under obstacles and jump and somersault off walls.

Tip: Free Shot

Don't stand still! The enemy assault never lets up, so keep moving. For this reason, beginners may want to choose "Free Shot" at the beginning to allow them to proceed through the stages and fire at the same time.

Tip: Special Attacks

Remember that your gun is not your only weapon. You can also attack with throws and kicks at close range by pressing the attack button. Throwing one enemy into a group of foes and destroying all of them is both efficient…and satisfying.
