Your armies are commanded by heroes, whose icons represent your forces on the world map. Much of the game is spent in this view, as you move your armies around looking for treasure, resources and enemies to smite. You must also manage the well-being of your settlements by building structures and making sure that necessary resources are being gathered. Heroes 2 is a turn-based game, so there's no reason to rush. When you've completed all your moves, click "End Turn" to continue.

Objectives

In most scenarios and missions, your objective is simply to defeat all opponents. The campaign game is a story-driven experience, so you might have other objectives as well. Regardless of specific objectives, Heroes 2 is a long and involved game, and a single scenario can take many hours to complete. Long-term strategy -- managing territory, recruiting units and gathering resources -- is as important as skill on the battlefield.

Combat

When you find yourself in combat, the view changes to a tactical perspective, with your troops arrayed on the left side of the screen and your opponent's on the right. In combat you command units of troops individually, issuing orders one at a time. The victor is usually determined by attrition, but you (and your opponent) always have the option of heading for the hills if a battle seems to be going poorly. Sometimes it's best to live and fight another day, after all.

Heroes

As the game's title implies, heroes are the most important facet of your conquest strategy. Heroes command armies and have access to spells and artifacts which can greatly improve your chances while upsetting the enemy's plans. As the game progresses, you'll be able to recruit more heroes to your cause, but they don't come cheap. Hero management is as important as territory and resource management if you wish to succeed.

Tip: Captains

Unlike in Heroes 1, you can hire a mercenary captain to manage the defenses of your towns and castles. This eliminates the need to employ a hero on such a mundane task -- your heroes can stay in the field.

Tip: Beginning Balance

At the beginning, all characters -- human and computer, regardless of hero type -- are more or less even. The decisions you make early in the game will have considerable impact on how well you keep up with your opponents.

Tip: Divide to Conquer

You can split groups of like creatures by holding shift and dragging a unit onto an empty space in your army display. The interface will ask how many you wish to separate. This is an easy way to organize your troops or leave garrisons behind.

Tip: Ships

You can rent ships and move your army across the water. Occasionally there are even sea battles. Whirlpools will move you to a different map location, but you'll lose some of your weaker troops in the vortex.
