Controls
Most of the game takes place on the world map, where you move your armies and visit unique locations. The map is a strategic overview, where you'll have the option to acquire new territory and recruit troops. Each army and hero has a limited number of moves, after which you must end the turn. In addition to navigating the world map, you'll also administer your towns and fortresses, building important structures and overseeing the collection of resources.
Getting Started
Heroes 3, like its predecessors before it, is a tactical wargame set in a fantastic realm of dragons, griffins and magical intrigue. Individual players can play through the campaign mode, a series of connected missions that tell the story of the game, or access any of the single-mission scenarios.
Goals
Though your objectives may vary from mission to mission, in most cases it's your job to wipe out any opposition you might encounter on the map. To accomplish this, you'll have to build up an army of magical beasts commanded by heroes. Your armies need to set out from a position of strength, so acquiring and properly managing territory is also of critical importance. Specific mission objectives are provided as needed throughout the game.
Combat
The other chief portion of the game is the combat interface, a tactical view of your army and that of an enemy. Here you issue specific commands to each unit of troops in your army, causing them to move and attack according to a strategy you determine. Each troop type has unique advantages and drawbacks which you'll discover as you play. Combat, like the rest of the game, is turn-based, so there's no need to worry if you lack gazelle-like reflexes.
Heroes
The nerve center of your military machine are your heroes, which you can recruit at local taverns. Heroes command your armies, run your garrisons, and generally do everything that you'd expect high-ranking minions to do. The more powerful and effective your heroes are, the higher your armies' morale is likely to be. Even more importantly, heroes can wield artifacts and magic spells to give you special advantages and rain doom down upon your enemies.
Tips & Tricks
Some artifacts, such as the Ring of Sulfur, can increase your production of valuable resources. One of the easiest ways to get defeated in Heroes 3 is to run out of something you need, so these artifacts are extremely valuable.
Tips & Tricks
If you're planning a major attack, recruit as many available troops as possible, then attack before your opponent has a chance to do the same. Timing can be an important factor in success.
Tips & Tricks
As a general rule, many heroes are better than a few. Try to hire a couple of heroes from the tavern right away, and add to your collection once money allows.
Tips & Tricks
Attacking a fortified castle is a serious proposition. Even a heavily outnumbered foe can usually defeat a careless aggressor -- be careful when planning major sieges.
