Basics

Hitman is an action stealth game in which you must complete a variety of increasingly challenging missions by locating and eliminating one or more victims in whatever way you choose, buying improved equipment along the way. Infiltration and stealthy kills raise the least alarm, but there are times when a straight-up firefight is the best way to go. This moody combination of sneaking and combat elicits comparisons to Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Solid, with an even darker and more deadly tone.

Stealth

It's a lot easier to kill someone who doesn't know they're about to die. Not only does stealth generally result in a better payday for Agent 47, it's necessary to stay alive in some cases. Your targets are often very well guarded, and getting close to them isn't usually very easy. Try to find alternate routes that avoid guards, and time your movements to slink by undetected. If you are caught, you can choose to stand and fight or run for cover -- remember you're probably outgunned.

Controls

This third-person game is controlled using the mouse and keyboard. The tutorial will guide you through all the basics of movement and interface, and you can change most commands to suit your play style in the options menu. The key to Hitman is getting used to the contextual crosshair: it changes based on what you're facing, and a right click brings up a menu of possible commands for each interaction. This allows for elegant control of complex moves without too much key tapping.

Missions

Each mission's primary objective is to eliminate some target or targets, and how you choose to do that is generally up to you. That said, the Agency tends to reward killers who do their jobs with a little bit of professional decorum, so wherever possible it's in your best interest to stay under the radar and do the deed unseen. You're paid for each mission based on your performance, and can use the cash to purchase improved equipment and weaponry for future missions.

Tutorial

Agent 47 begins his career as a professional killer alone in a darkened room. The voice you hear is your new employer, and you'll have to do as you're told if you hope to regain your identity or freedom. The first mission acts as a tutorial in the art of killing people for money, introducing you to common weapons and the basic principles of stealth and tactical planning. Use it to familiarize yourself with Hitman's unique blend of action and sneakery, then move on to the paying missions.

Tip: Playing Dress-Up

Sometimes you can sneak in plain sight -- in many cases, the uniform of a guard or other "trusted" individual is enough to get you past security. Steal clothes from those you kill or knock out.

Tip: Body Manipulation

Don't leave bodies lying around. It's rude and it makes it much more likely that the alarm will be raised before you finish your objective. Drag your victims to closets or other out-of-the-way places.

Tip: Surprise!

Often the best way to take out a victim is from several hundred yards. Many missions offer a variety of great sniping locations, so if you don't want to get your hands too dirty, invest in a good scoped rifle.

Tip: Clues

Don't expect volumes of information on your target and his environment. Sometimes you'll get nothing but a location and a blurry photograph -- or even a sketch. Take careful note of clues and plan carefully.
