Overview

Hitman: Blood Money is the fourth installment in the popular Hitman series. As the mysterious Agent 47, you carry out contract killings using stealth, cunning, improvisation and brute force. Newcomers to the series are fine starting with this installment, which tells a new story and opens up the game world for even greater freedom of choice. How you hunt your targets, and how you kill them, is entirely up to you...from making it look like an accident to riddling the place with bullets.

Controls

The first mission, set in a derelict amusement park, serves as a general introduction to the controls of Blood Money. Played with the mouse and keyboard, the system uses a series of context-sensitive controls that change what you can do based on what you're near. In general the game plays like a third person shooter, but 47 has some additional maneuvers to improve his stealth and deadliness. Most key commands can be remapped in the options menu, but the defaults are usually fine.

Missions

The Hitman games have always given you a lot of choice in how you finish your missions -- or enough rope to hang yourself with, depending on how you look at it. Blood Money carries this even farther; now your options for taking out a mark are pretty much limited only by your brutal imagination and what's lying around. Elegant, clever kills that leave little or no trace of the cause reap the greatest monetary rewards, but you can literally play however you want.

Notoriety

Notoriety is a new concept introduced in Blood Money. The greater your notoriety is, the harder it is to carry out missions. A notorious Agent 47 is an easy-to-recognize Agent 47, so even with his skills at stealth and disguise, he may be spotted if you're well known. Notoriety increases when you leave a trail of bodies or botch a mission by killing the mark in a sloppy way. Between missions you can pay out a little cash to lower your Notoriety.

Equipment

The expanded arsenal in Blood Money includes a variety of realistic pistols, rifles and other weapons, all available for sale between missions. You can even pay to modify your equipment, adding better scopes or bigger clips. Beyond mere guns, 47 has access to poisons, knives, garrotes...and can also use nearly anything in the environment as a weapon too. Choose your equipment carefully, since it's not inexpensive and money is tight, especially early on.

Stealth

You make the most money, and gain the least notoriety, when you sneak through missions and take out your target as cleanly and effectively as possible -- the best way is often to make it look like an accident. While you can certainly blast your way through most missions, your targets are often heavily guarded, and may be surrounded by innocents who don't deserve to become victims. The best approach is usually low-key -- watch guard movements and employ disguises to get through undetected.

Tip: Monster Closet

One of the cool new additions in Blood Money is the ability to hide in a closet or darkened nook and then fling yourself out to ambush an unsuspecting foe as he walks by. Plus you have a ready-made place to store the body.

Tip: You Go First

Blood Money is designed to be played as a third-person game, but you can switch to a first person view if you're more comfortable with that perspective.

Tip: That Would Hurt

Remember, it doesn't always need to be bullets to the head or knives to the heart. Take a look at the environment around your target -- there are often ways to kill without making it look like murder. Plus it's satisfying to drop a chandelier on someone.

Tip: Coming Through

In firefights -- or whenever you're feeling meanspirited -- you can grab a foe and frog-march him in front of you like a human shield. He absorbs the bullets, and you come out nice and whole.

Tip: Ow, My Brain

Head shots will almost always drop an opponent immediately, so train yourself to take them whenever possible. This is especially important when you need to eliminate a target without too much fuss.
