Basics
Hitman: Contracts is the third in the popular Hitman series. As the mysterious Agent 47, your job is to secretly infiltrate some of the most heavily guarded fortresses on earth and eliminate a target with professional aplomb. There's a twist this time: 47 is remembering old contracts as he lies bleeding to death from a gunshot wound. Don't worry, these are all brand new missions (though some have a lot in common with those from previous Hitman games), so even pros will find lots of play here.
Controls
The first mission of the game acts as a tutorial, though anyone familiar with first or third person shooters will have little difficulty picking up the controls of this game. You can customize your keyboard and mouse controls in the game options, which is helpful since 47 has plenty of stealthy tricks and secret tools hidden up his sleeves. Once you've got the basics of movement and interaction, the game will introduce you to good stealth practices and more advanced techniques.
Missions
Each mission is a contract -- you receive a briefing, a photo, and information about your target or targets. It's then up to you to get in, find the target, take the life, and get away. There's always more than one path open to you, however; so how you choose to play Contracts is really up to you. The most elegant assassinations are those where no eyebrows are raised, where the death looks accidental...but there's really nothing stopping you from leaving a trail of bodies from here to Timbuktu.
Gameplay
Agent 47 may be dying in the present, but back in the day he was no slouch when it came to doing his job. This silent killer is well-versed in the arts of assassination and infiltration, and you must learn to be. Even if you go in guns blazing, there are times when a stealthy kill, a hidden body or a stolen guard's uniform will get you closer to the most important goal: your target for the mission. Experiment with 47's different tools and techniques to master the art of the kill.
Equipment
The Hitman games have always been admired for their accurate and generous weapons lists, and Contracts is no exception. From pistols to rifles, close range to far back, you'll have access to a dizzying array of ordnance with which to meet the terms of each contract. Bear in mind that larger weapons, like assault rifles, cannot be concealed -- and will naturally raise some suspicion. Silenced weapons are ideal for the stealthy approach, while hands-on people will stick with the melee tools.
Tip: Poison
It doesn't always take a bullet or a knife to end someone -- a drop of poison in their food or a needle prick to the back of the neck can do the job.
Tip: Gotta Go
Watch guards carefully. They have needs just like real people, and a lone guard in the bathroom is much easier to take out quietly. If you don't feel like waiting, put some strong laxative in the guard's coffee. That'll loosen things up.
Tip: Choke on This
If you're spotted and the alarm is raised, you can expect some trouble pretty soon. When a firefight is the only option, seek out a choke point so guards will funnel in a few at a time. Otherwise their numbers will overwhelm you.
Tip: The Lay of the Land
Remember that in the Hitman games, there's always more than one -- and usually more than five -- ways to skin the proverbial cat. If a tactic isn't working, take a few minutes to scope out the area and seek alternatives.
