Basics

In Hospital Tycoon, your objective is to build, manage and grow a successful hospital. You're responsible for hiring qualified staff, buying equipment, beautifying the place and even managing the personality quirks of your employees -- all while juggling budget and the responsibility of patient lives. The game offers two play modes: story, which is broken into a series of objective-driven episodes, and Sandbox, where you're free to run your hospital however you like.

Tutorial

Hospital Tycoon's mouse-driven interface is similar to those of other management games like School Tycoon and Sim City. The included tutorial level will introduce you to the basics of the menu system, plus walk you through the process of purchasing, staffing, treatment and people management skills. This game isn't meant to be especially challenging, so if you prefer to try it without the tutorial you probably won't have any difficulty.

Hospital Management

If you think of Hospital Tycoon as two games rolled into one, the first chunk is the overall management of the facility. This involves hiring qualified staff, purchasing equipment, expanding as needed and decorating the place. Patients drift in with a variety of unusual illnesses, and you'll need a competent staff, plus the right diagnostic equipment, to heal them properly. The staff pretty much manages its own activities, but you are in charge of hiring based on skills and expected salary.

Staff Relations

The members of your staff have personalities and needs, which introduces a Sims-like medical drama side to the game. Many potential hires have personalities that might not gel with your current employees, and everyone who works for you has certain expectations regarding their environment and compensation. Do you hire the brilliant surgeon with the obnoxious personality, or go with the mild-mannered but mediocre doc? Such decisions have an effect on how smoothly your hospital runs.

Budget

Money management is tied inextricably with patient care. The more patients you treat, the more that come in needing help, leading in turn to more hefty medical bills that go straight into your hospital's bank account. It's not always easy to balance spending and income, though, because they affect each other. For example, you'll see a sharp drop in patients if you have a lot of fatalities, which that can easily happen if you haven't bought the right kind of treatment or diagnostic equipment.

Tip: Mystery Bugs

Sometimes patients come in with a disease your staff is unable to identify. If this happens, you'll have to research the illness before you're able to treat it, which can take precious time. Make sure you have adequate research facilities and proper staff.

Tip: Knowledge is Power

Any illnesses you have researched -- along with ones you know off the bat -- are listed in the Curadex, which includes symptoms and recommended treatment.

Tip: Pretty Healthy

You want to allocate some of your budget to decorations -- art, plants, fountains and so on -- to beautify your hospital. The nicer it is, the more likely you are to attract lots of patients.

Tip: Inspections

Your hospital is inspected periodically by the health department, and you can face a variety of penalties if you're not up to scratch. Make sure the place is clean and that the people working there are qualified.
