Basics
For each dish, the various steps are broken down into timed tasks. Some, such as baking or boiling, are very simple, and only require monitoring a timer and clicking when the mark is in the green. Others, such as chopping, will require you to click repeatedly until the task is done. Complex tasks like simmering will require you to do multiple activities in a given time window, such as stirring when you see the circle arrow appear on the timer. Though each activity is relatively easy in itself, it can become difficult to keep up once you have multiple dishes all going at the same time. Make a mistake, and your dish will suffer. Once completed, each dish will receive from 1 to 6 stars, and you will need to meet or exceed the number of stars needed for each round to move on.
Kitchen Cleanup
The Kitchen Cleanup minigame will appear occasionally between rounds. The game works like a traditional match-3, just swap items around to match 3 of a kind and make them disappear. To pass, beat the score at the top of the screen before time runs out. However, if any roaches or rats fall into the pink areas that the health inspector is watching, you will get a fine. Get fined 3 times, and you will fail. Succeed and you will earn new power-ups.
Menu
Between rounds, you will need to create your menu for the meal. In early rounds, you will only have to worry about the entrée course, but later on, you will add appetizers and dessert as well. Each course will have up to three items available. Be sure to rotate your menu frequently, or the critics will get bored with your meals and give a lower score. You can also buy new recipes using the stars you earn in previous rounds. Recipes with medals represent more complex recipes that will impress the critics, and the more medals the better.
Tip: Power-ups
Power-ups are very useful items that can help you pass more difficult levels. They can be earned by passing the Kitchen Clean-Up minigame. The power-ups you can get are the Spatula, which can slow down time, Secret Spices, which will make your current activity have higher quality, or the Chef-o-Matic, which will complete one activity instantly. As you can only use each of these power-ups once, you should try to save them for when you really need them.
Quality
Once you begin a dish, the quality meter next to that dish will start counting down. The longer you go without finishing a step in that dish, the lower your meter will go. When you do finish a step, your meter will refill. If your meter falls all the way to the bottom, your dish will lose quality and you will receive fewer stars. So you will need to make sure that you work on all the dishes for each course more or less simultaneously.
Tip: Timing
One of the most important elements to your star ranking will be to make sure that all of your dishes are completed at roughly the same time. Once a dish is complete and sitting around, you will lose stars very quickly, so try to remember how many steps a dish has and how long it takes to complete so you can match dishes with similar schedules on your menu. Also remember that if a dish gets a perfect 6 stars, it will not lose quality due to time.
