Getting Started
Hot Dog King is played with the mouse and keyboard. At the title screen, click the New Game option, followed by Full Game. Click Personnel, Fashionable, or Commercial to choose a personality for your staff. Finally, select either Easy, Normal, or Hard to choose a difficulty level. This determines the threat competing restaurants will present to you as you build your build your fast food empire.
Cities
When the game begins, you’ll be asked to select one of three different cities. Click one of the cities shown, then click the OK button to be sent there. Once you’ve arrived, you can tilt the camera by holding down the right mouse button and moving the mouse. Hold in the middle mouse button (or your mouse scroll wheel) and move the mouse in any direction to pan the camera. Finally, click one of the icons on the top of the screen to instantly move to specific areas of the city.
Founding the Store
Naturally, you’ll need to purchase a store before you can start selling food. Look on the city for sparkling buildings; these can be purchased by first clicking the building, then the green button that pops up next to them. When your assistant asks if you want to purchase the building, confirm your selection by clicking OK. When you first begin the game, money is tight and the most expensive real estate will be unavailable to you.
First Steps
You’re not done yet! You’ll need to purchase provisions and hire staff members before you’re officially in business. Click the monitor in the bottom right corner of the screen to open the PDA menu. Click Facilities to purchase necessary items for your store. Click the arrows to cycle through the available appliances, then click the Buy Item icon to add it to your store. When you’re done shopping, click the Back button to return to the PDA menu.
Personnel
While in the PDA menu, click Recruitment. This is where you’ll hire employees to service your customers. Click on one of the applicants on the left side of the screen, then click the Recruit Staff button to welcome them to the team. Click Back, then click the Staff button. Finally, click Staff Allocation, then click the button marked 1 to assign your new employee to the cash register. Once your restaurant becomes popular, you’ll need to hire more employees to man a second register.
Filling the Fridge
Finally, you’ll need to buy food. Do this by clicking on Products in the PDA menu. Click the silver button on the top right corner of the screen. A black window will appear containing food items. Click the type of food you wish to buy on the left side of the screen, then one of the specific food items shown on the top. Click Add To Cart to purchase that food item. After you’re finished shopping, click the Checkout button, then Purchase and Exit.
Saving
Hot Dog King is a long and involving game, and you may not be able to finish it in one setting. Fortunately, the save feature lets you record your progress and return to the game at a later date. Press the Escape key to pause the game, then click the Save button. Now you can come back to the game whenever you like just by clicking Load Game at the title screen!
Tip: Sudden Genre Shift
The game is occasionally interrupted by random challenges, ranging from fights with irate customers to a system debug that plays like the classic arcade game Space Invaders. Losing these mini-games can have lasting consequences, so pay close attention to the instructions given and play to win!
Tip: Upgrades
As you progress through the game, your stores will level up, granting you access to items that were previously unavailable. These handy appliances will in turn increase your profit potential. For instance, once you progress to level three, you’ll be able to buy an oven, letting you graduate from pre-packaged food to more savory meals cooked right in the store!
