Turns

Each move you make will generally take one month of game time. Once you've made a move, you must click the End Turn button on the bottom right hand corner of the screen to confirm your decision and give the other countries in Europe a chance to plot their own military and diplomatic strategies. Some moves take more than one month of game time to complete, although you will be allowed to begin new moves when the other countries have all been given a turn.

Land Battles

When other countries invade your territory or threaten other countries allied with you, you must defend your interests by dragging troops to the scene of the conflict. Once there, the game switches from turn-based strategy to real-time combat. Use the arrow keys to move through the battlefield. Left click one of your units, then move the mouse to another location on the battlefield and right click to send them to that area. Your troops will automatically clash with any nearby enemies.

Naval Battles

Naval battles work differently from land battles. You will first need to right-click one of your ships, then hold the right mouse button down and drag it toward an enemy vessel to plot a course toward that foe. Next, when your ship is next to the enemy, click one of the weapons (including grapeshot, chains, and cannons) shown on the bottom center of the screen, then click either the starboard or port cannon buttons to fire to your left or right.

Getting Started

At the title screen, you may select either Campaign, Historic Battles, or Quick Game to begin playing the game. Alternately, you can adjust the settings to your liking with Options or use the Tutorial to get a better understanding of the game's play mechanics. Move the mouse in any direction to guide the cursor over one of the available options, then click the left mouse button to confirm your selection.

Building

Now that you've gotten your bearings, it's time to set some buildings on your territory. First, click the button labeled “Buildings” in the bottom left hand corner of the screen. A window will appear in the center of the screen. Click the tab on the top of the window to select the type of building you need, then click one of the buildings that appears. Finally, click on your territory to set the building down on that area.

Map

You'll want to become familiar with the continent of Europe before you attempt to conquer it. Press the arrow keys on your keyboard to scroll around the map; you can also get a closer view of the objects on the map by moving the scroll wheel on your mouse up and down. Notice that each territory on the map has its own designated color. For instance, all countries controlled by Russia are a deep shade of green. This helps organize the map and quickly tells you which countries are hostile.

Officers

Once you've built a military fortress, you can train a soldier as a commanding officer, then assign troops to him. First click the Units button on the bottom right of the screen. Next, select an officer from the list that appears, and use the mouse to drag him to the fortress. After he is properly trained, he can lead a unit of your army. Click the Units button again, click one of the units shown at the bottom of the screen, then drag the unit over to the commanding officer to unite them.

Commands

You will occasionally need to move units of soldiers from one territory to the next. You may do this by moving the cursor over a unit, then holding down the left mouse button and dragging the unit over to the new territory. Only three units can be dragged onto a territory, with a fourth unit used as reinforcements in battles. You can also drag soldiers onto ships for naval combat when it becomes necessary to defend your shores from invading countries.

Tip: Research

You will accumulate research points as time goes by. To use these points, press the F6 key and select one of the options on the left hand side of the branching list. This increases your country's knowledge in several key areas of study, and is necessary in order to put larger, more useful buildings on your map.

Tip: Do Your Homework

Imperial Glory is a very complex game, with hundreds of strategic options and two separate styles of play. You will probably do better by trying the Tutorial and a couple Quick Games before you jump into the Campaign or Historical Battles.
