Basics

If you remember the heady days of the Monkey Island games, then Jack Keane is for you. This point-and-click adventure has much in common with that beloved series, from the absurd plot to the nautical setting. You're Jack, an agent for the British government sent to uncover the mysteries on Tooth Island -- a tropical atoll in the Indian Ocean where the mysterious Dr. T is hatching some malevolent plant. Comedy, incompetence and outrageously silly puzzles mark this cheery game as one worth trying.

Controls

If you've played one point-and-click adventure you can pick them all up; in this game, Jack is onscreen all the time and you maneuver him using the mouse -- just right click on open land to make him walk there. Right click objects in the world to interact with them -- text at the bottom of the screen describes what you'll do. Jack's inventory appears in the upper left of the screen. To use an item, right click it, then right click on a target of your choice to perform an appropriate action.

Puzzles

Like all adventures, Jack Keane is really about getting from Point A to Point B by solving the sometimes devious, sometimes obvious, always silly puzzles and obstacles that are in your way. Generally you'll know when you've encountered a puzzle, and may have already picked up some or all of the items you'll need to solve it: Jack's knife, for example, can be used to cut ropes and vines or even pick locks. Try using items in your inventory on objects in the world and see what happens.

Tip: Sparkles Mark the Spot

Keep an eye out for small sparkles in the game world: they're there to call your attention to that area. Usually they mean you can climb up or down at that point, or that there's some important game event nearby.

Tip: See Ya, Wouldn't Want to Be Ya

Some items have many uses throughout the game, while others can only be used for one thing. One-use items disappear from your inventory after they've served their purpose, so things don't get too cluttered.

Tip: Retrace those Steps

If you find yourself unable to go on, go back instead -- retrace your steps and look around for items and clues you might have missed. Generally, the objects or information you need to get past an obstacle are somewhere in its vicinity.
