Controls
Jagged Alliance 2 is a mouse-driven game, but the controls vary depending on what you're doing. The first time you play, a series of help messages will pop up and walk you through your first steps as a mercenary boss. These tutorial messages introduce you to the basic controls throughout the game interface. If you're unsure what a button does, point at it to reveal a tooltip. Players familiar with the original Jagged Alliance will find that a lot has changed, so pay attention to the tutorial.
Getting Started
Jagged Alliance 2 is a strategy game that puts you in the role of mercenary commander. You must hire and equip a squad, then infiltrate the jungles of Arulco and recapture the island sector by sector. As commander, you not only give orders in the field, but you manage resources, negotiate with potential allies, pay salaries, buy equipment and deal with all the mercenaries' day-to-day complaints and foibles. It's lonely at the top. To begin, click Start New Game.
Strategic Basics
Jagged Alliance 2 is basically divided into two play modes: strategic and tactical. In the strategic mode, you're responsible for the overall macro-management of your activities on Arulco -- that means hiring squad members, keeping your existing squad happy, managing money and deciding which sections of the island to hit next. The strategic portion of the game takes place in real time. The decisions you make here will affect the health, morale and combat-readiness of your squad.
Laptop
Your laptop computer is the nerve center where you control your killers-for-hire operation. From here you can review email messages, check important files and go online to mercenary websites to hire new squad members and purchase their equipment. The laptop's interface is very intuitive. This is actually your first stop when you begin a new game. Since no one's shooting at you yet, take this opportunity to check out all the websites and read your email for some important background info.
Personalities
Putting the "jagged" in Jagged Alliance is the fact that you're not exactly working with trained West Point grads, full of steely discipline and "yes sirs." These are mercenaries, all they want is a paycheck. They have their own agendas, likes and dislikes, and many of them will be perfectly happy to ignore your orders or even turn their guns on a teammate they particularly dislike. Your biggest challenge may be assembling a squad that's more likely to kill the enemy than each other.
Tactical Basics
When your hired mercs drop into a territory and start blasting, the view changes to tactical mode. Here, you command individual soldiers in turn-based, small-squad combat against enemy troops. Your mercs have a number of action points they can use to perform actions during their turn. In most cases, you're trying to capture territory, but many missions have multiple sub-objectives. Take advantage of the terrain, seek cover and try to divide the enemy in combat.
Tip: Rooftop Sniping
Positioning expert snipers on building roofs is a great way to give them a good view of the landscape without exposing them to too much fire. Your close-range guys depend on good snipers to back them up.
Tip; Stealth Mode
Soldiers can move in "stealth" mode, which is virtually silent and makes it dramatically harder for enemies to see them. You move more slowly when you're creeping along, though, so it's best when you need to sneak up on someone or get to a specific location unnoticed.
Tip: Science Fiction
There's a little science fiction subplot in Jagged Alliance 2 that you can turn on or off from the options menu. If you want to play a straight-up modern day tactical shooter, turn them off.
Tip: Here's Help
Remember that you can tap "H" to bring up a text-based help window. These windows appear automatically when you first play, but you can summon them whenever you want if you've forgotten how to do something.
Tip: Triangulation
The enemy is very, very good at finding cover that makes them difficult to hit. A wise strategy is to always attack a single enemy with two or more of your people from different directions.
Tip: Holding Territory
Once you've captured a strategically important piece of territory, you need to train (and pay for) militias to help protect it. If you leave it undefended, the enemy can just stroll right back in and take it away.
