Getting Started
Press the start button at the title screen, then press the action button twice to start a new game. After a brief introduction, you'll be airlifted to the small island nation of San Esperito, then pushed out of the plane at an altitude of 5,000 feet. Your first mission on the way to the first safehouse will introduce you to movement, combat, and vehicle controls before your first “real” mission begins.
Missions
After you've been given a mission, its starting point will appear as a red star on your map, shown on the bottom left hand corner of the screen. Just run to the red star and you'll begin that mission. Side missions appear as small blue dots; generally, these are collectible items like rifle scopes and drug contraband. You'll also find the location of safe houses and other important areas by frequently checking your map.
PDA
There's one more trick you've got up your sleeve: a personal digital assistant. Press the PDA button to access your organizer, then press the controller in any direction to highlight one of the available options. When you've found an option you'd like to access, press the action button. Two especially useful PDA options are the heavy drop (a vehicle of your choice is dropped nearby) and extraction (you're taken to the nearest safe house).
Vehicles
The road to your next mission will be a long and hard one if you're on foot. You can close these gaps more quickly and safely with vehicles. Find any vehicle (even if it's already occupied!) and press the vehicle button while standing next to it to climb inside. Hold the fire button to accelerate, and tap the grenade button to slow down. You can also perform wild stunts by following the directions shown onscreen.
Health
As Rico, you're one tough hombre, but don't get too cocky -- you're not invincible! When you're struck with bullets, grenades, or other weapons, your health will drop. When the green health bar at the top right of the screen is completely empty, you'll be killed in action, and will be dragged back to the last safe house you visited. Fortunately, you can partially refill your health bar and stave off death by collecting the green health packages dropped by your foes.
Tip: Conserve Your Ammo
You've got an unlimited supply of pistol ammunition, but the game isn't nearly as generous with ammo for other weapons. Stick with the pistol until you really need that heavy artillery -- you'll be thankful for it later!
Tip: Out With A Bang
Throwing grenades at police roadblocks can be difficult. However, you can improve your accuracy by first throwing the grenade, then immediately tapping the lock-on button, followed by the fire button. The grenade will explode in mid-air, taking out any nearby enemies and obstacles.
