Launching the Game

As in most games, your adventure begins at the title screen. "Game” will either launch a new game, save your current progress, or load a saved game. "Gang Bang” is the game's multiplayer function – unfortunately, due to the age of Kingpin, online multiplayer is no longer supported. "Options” allows you to make audio and control tweaks, and "Visuals” lets you adjust effects, resolution, fullscreen toggle, and more. The game's control scheme is a bit dated; to give it a more modern FPS feel, we recommend mapping "Step Left” to [A], "Step Right” to [D], "Up / Jump” to [Space] and "Next Weapon” to your mouse wheel, if available.

Opening Walkthrough: Part 1

Welcome to the gritty, art deco world of Kingpin: Life of Crime! Your story begins in a seedy back alley in Skidrow, where Nikko Blanco has sent you a personal message to stay out of his turf by way of a beat down from a couple of his thugs. Bruised, bloodied and beaten, you get up, grab a piece of lead piping, and swear to bury Nikko and anyone else who gets in your way.

Opening Walkthrough: Part 3

Make your way out of the alley and find the Pawn-O-Matic building. Things are tough in Skidrow, so the door is locked – activate the intercom with the [F] key to be let in. Even if you managed to kill and rob everyone around you, you will not have enough cash to buy a gun. Luckily, shop owner Sharky is willing to exchange a standard pistol for a condenser coil, which his sources tell him is in store room B at Heilman Shipping & Receiving, located directly behind the Pawn-O-Matic building. Head there.

Opening Walkthrough: Part 4

The Heilman warehouse is being watched by two heavily armed guards. Approach them if you’re feeling lucky, but your measly little lead pipe doesn’t stand much of a chance against their pistols, and they will open fire at first sight of you. You can try sneaking by holding [Shift], but that’s not likely to work either. You’re going to have to make a more tactical approach.

Opening Walkthrough: Part 5

Talk nicely with the [Y] key to the homeless woman nearby, more than once if necessary. She'll give you a good tip – the guards are listening to a ball game on the radio, and are easily distracted during exciting moments. Save your game, wait until you hear the unmistakable crack of a home run, and sprint into the warehouse while the guards have their backs turned (don't worry about sneaking, they won't hear you). You may want to give them a few seconds to run to the radio, as they're likely to see you if you run in right away.

Opening Walkthrough: Part 6

The condenser coil is indeed waiting in store room B, but it's on the top of a rack that you can't access. Look closely and you'll see a ventilation shaft that drops right near it. You're going to have to head to store room A (pictured here), take down the guard, and make your way up to its vent to crawl through. You're going to need to push a crate to get some leverage – walk into it to push it forward, or hold down the activate key [F] and walk backwards to pull when it inevitably gets stuck on something. Once you're up there, don't forge to crouch [C] to squeeze through.

Opening Walkthrough: Part 7

Squeeze past some nasty rats in the shaft, and drop down through the first grate you come across. You’re now in storage room B, staring right at the condenser coil! Crouch [C] and walk forward, you will automatically add it to your inventory by merely touching it. Head back to the Pawn-O-Matic, and Sharky will keep up his end of the deal by giving you a shiny new pistol.

Opening Walkthrough: Part 8

We’ve gotten you a piece, it’s up to you now to enact your revenge on Nikko Blanco! The game world opens up to you once you’re able to shoot your way past thugs, so get out there and explore. You probably have some cash by now, so be sure to go back to the alley and buy the crowbar for $1. Your journey begins in the sewers, but will soon open up to all kinds of locales. Good luck out there, you’re going to need it.

Opening Walkthrough: Part 2

Kingpin: Life of Crime is about much more than bloody revenge, so coming out swinging at the first person you see is a fantastic way to get yourself killed. Make sure your weapon is holstered ([G] by default) and learn to socialize with those around you – [Y] for a positive approach, [X] for an insult. Occasionally you will be asked a yes or no question, at which point, [Y] is "yes” and [X] is "no.” The first bum you meet will offer you a crowbar for $1, which doubles the reach and damage of the pipe you're carrying. Keep this in mind, and come back later when you have some cash.

Tip: Robbing the Deceased

When you kill a character in Kingpin, they automatically drop any items they were holding. However, it’s up to you to search their bodies for cash! Crouch in front of the body [C] and activate it [F] to do a quick search. Money’s not easy to come by in Kingpin, so be sure to grab it before somebody else does.

Tip: Easy Money

Here's an easy way to start your adventure with a pocketful of cash. Just outside the alley at the start of the game is an alcoholic, who claims he'll tell you "something good” in exchange for a drink. Explore the Heilman warehouse a bit and you'll find a bottle of whiskey, right next to a giant, inaccessible safe. Give the whiskey to the alcoholic, and he'll tell you the combination! Head on back and pocket an easy $100, which you can use to upgrade your pistol's rate of fire, stock up on ammo, or save for a rainy day.

Tip: Crates

Be on the lookout for special ammo crates. They have a very convenient picture of a guy swinging a blunt object, letting you know that you should destroy them and loot what's inside. Be sure to use the pipe or the crowbar, though – shooting at an ammo crate will cause it to blow up! Kingpin also has special crates that can be pushed and pulled, these are illustrated with a silhouette pushing against an object. Walk against these to push them forward, or activate them by holding down [F] and walk backwards to pull.

Tip: Hiring Thugs

There are lots of guns (or pipes, or crowbars) for hire in the world of Kingpin, who will follow you and fight whoever you fight for a small fee. The first potential hire you'll meet is right outside of the Pawn-O-Matic, and can be had for $10. To interact with your thugs after they've been hired, point your cursor at them and press [Y] for both "follow me” and "move out of the way,” [X] to hold their position, and [Q] to issue a specific command. After pressing [Q] on a thug, point to the enemy you want attacked or the lock or safe you need opened, and press [F] to activate.
