Tutorial
Kohan II is a real-time strategy game in which you must build and defend settlements, recruit companies of troops and destroy your enemies on the battlefield. It's not necessary to play the original Kohan to enjoy this sequel, as the important story elements are reviewed for newcomers. Everyone should play the tutorial missions, though, which guide you through the interface and basics of control. Then you can access either the single-player campaign or one of the standalone skirmish missions.
Resources
Iron, gold, wood, stone and mana are all crucial resources in Kohan II. Structures built by engineer companies can mine or gather most of these units, all of which are required by structures and companies to some extent or another. One of the easiest paths to defeat is to run low on a crucial resource, so do not underestimate the needs of your growing military. Similarly, a great way to cripple an enemy is to damage their resource flow, which can render them helpless against your armies.
Recruiting Companies
Unlike most real-time strategies, Kohan II is designed around companies, hired at the town center, rather than individual units. Rather than recruit a bowman, for example, you recruit a company of bowmen led by a captain. The custom recruitment system allows you to design and build your own unique companies from available troops and heroes, then save them for use whenever you like. Companies fight as a single unit, and you cannot control the actions of a single troop within a company.
Building Structures
Protected settlements are the key to success in Kohan II. You must build a town center and a series of supporting structures if you're to succeed against your enemy. Each structure has a specific cost in resources, and returns some benefit to your faction. Workers housed in the town center can be commanded to build structures in settlements, while engineers in the field can build special structures outside the protective walls of a town. Many structures can be upgraded as the game progresses.
Combat
Conflict is inevitable, so it's wise to recruit some military units as soon as possible. Combat, like everything else in Kohan II, takes place in real time. To attack, select a company and right click on the enemy or structure you wish to assault. Your units will rush into the fray and fight according to their own intelligence. If you find yourself losing a battle, you can use the "run" command to flee into protected areas where your units will recover from the defeat.
Tip: Exploration
The "explore" button is a great tool; tell an expendable unit to explore the region and they'll wander around, revealing more and more of the map until they meet their doom.
Tip: Outposts
Outposts (and corresponding structures for other races) can be built outside your settlement and offer a huge advantage -- not only do they increase your range of sight, but they'll automatically attack enemies who pass nearby.
Tip: Supply Zones
Within supply zones, injured companies will slowly replenish health and even resupply with fresh troops. So long as a company isn't totally annihilated, retreat to within this area will guarantee a full recovery.
Tip: Formations
Each of the three formations has an advantage and disadvantage relative to speed, attack efficiency and sight range. Learn to quickly switch among them in each company to maximize your efficiency.
Tip: Siege Equipment
Some companies are just one unit -- usually powerful siege equipment. Though weak against direct attacks, when kept in the rear line these units can lay waste to an enemy settlement in seconds.
