Movement
Move with the directional controls. Like all vampires, Kain is endowed with powers far above those of mortal men and women. Press the jump button and Kain will spring from the ground, leaping fifteen feet into the air. Press and hold the button while in the air and Kain will float, temporarily defying gravity. When you're on the ground, you can interact with switches, doors, and other glowing objects by pressing the action button while standing next to them.
Getting Started
At the title screen, press the start button, then press start again to begin your quest. When you're prompted to choose a defense style, press up and down on the controller to highlight either Assisted (hold down block to defend yourself against enemies) or Skilled (tap block the moment each attack hits for Kain to counter it). Once you've chosen your preferred defense style, press the jump button to watch the opening cinematic and start the game.
Controls
To survive, Kain must feed -- and to feed, Kain must fight. First approach a victim, then hold down the fight stance button. You can also press the block button to block attacks. While in the fight stance, tap the action button to lash out at the victim with your claws. You can also grab the victim by pressing the draw blood button. When you've got a hapless human in your clutches, press the action button to choke him, or tap draw blood one more time to throw your victim to the floor.
Treasures
As you journey through the world of Nosgoth, you'll discover chests containing ancient vampire artifacts. Stand next to a chest and press the draw blood button to extract the secrets held within the chest. Some of these chests will increase your “lore” or experience points. Gain enough lore and you'll boost your strength and lengthen your health bar. Other chests will enchant any weapons you may be carrying.
Health
Kain's health bar is shown on the top left hand corner of the screen. Kain loses health when he's attacked by humans, struck by other vampires, or touches water (including steam, but not mist). However, his health will also drop with the passage of time, making it important for Kain to feed regularly. If Kain's health is completely drained, he will fall to the floor and blow away as a pile of ash! If Kain dies, you'll be returned to the last checkpoint you reached.
Blood
Any human who's fallen to your might and can be drained of their blood. Stand over the human, and when he flashes red, press the draw blood button. Kain will inhale all the blood from his victim and convert it to health. Every human can be drained of blood, but some have more blood than others. You can also steal weapons from your victims by standing over the club, sword, or dagger they’ve dropped, then pressing the action button.
Dark Gifts
Along with his deadly claws, Kain can rely on Dark Arts to subdue his victims. Hold down the Dark Arts button to bring up a menu, then highlight one of the available arts. Release the Dark Arts button, then tap the cast button to activate the selected Dark Art. Some Dark Arts require certain conditions; for instance, Mist can only be performed when you're standing in mist, and Fury can only be used when your rage bar is full.
Tip: Live by the Sword
The short sword is your best bet in a fight. Every weapon does the same amount of damage, but Kain swings the short sword with the most skill and speed. By contrast, the broadsword is the worst weapon in the game, taking a very long time to swing.
Tip: Mist Attack
Innocent bystanders are the easiest victims, but hardened warriors carry a lot more blood. However, you can feed on them with little risk to yourself if you're standing in mist. Use your mist Dark Art to sneak up on the soldier, then when the skull appears over his head, press the attack button to execute a single deadly blow!
