Controls

Soul Reaver 2 uses slightly unusual -- though fairly simple -- controls. The first sequence takes place in a temple stronghold that directs the time stream, and the place presents few challenges and lots of time to wander around and experiment with the controls. You can customize your own in the game options menu, though the defaults are pretty effective. Use the Ring Menu (default: Enter) to access your inventory and weapons, the left and right mouse buttons to interact and attack.

Basics

The third installment in the Legacy of Kain series, Soul Reaver 2 is a third person action adventure game in which you must guide Raziel across a vast world to confront his foe, the vampire Kain. A well-paced combination of combat, exploration, puzzle solving and story development have led this game to become a favorite among many fans. Its fairly easy controls -- but difficult to master challenges of combat and environmental puzzles -- are suitable for both veteran gamers and beginners alike.

Storyline

This game is the sequel to Soul Reaver and Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, and unfortunately for newcomers to the series, Soul Reaver 2 doesn't really give you much (any) background to the fairly complicated storyline. If you pay attention to the opening movie and subsequent story scenes, you'll be able to pick up the gist of what's going on, but for those who don't like to start in the middle of things, we recommend going all the way back to Blood Omen, which kicks off the series.

Souls

Combat makes up a good portion of Raziel's daily activities. He's a formidable warrior, being a demonpire, and can use his claws or any of the weapons you'll find scattered around. Hold down the D key to swallow the souls of fallen enemies and restore your health. After the first level you get access to the Soul Reaver, a devastating weapon that powers up as it consumes the souls of foes you slay. Of course, if the Reaver eats the souls, that means Raziel can't.

The Spectral Realm

Raziel can also enter the Spectral Realm at will. This gloomy, haunting analogue to the real world allows access to places you couldn't otherwise reach, and it's Raziel's natural habitat. His health drains slowly but constantly when in the "real" world, something that doesn't happen in the Spectral Realm. Though you can phase into the Spectral Realm at any time, you can only exit at certain flashing points. The game will generally give you a clue as to when you should shift worlds.

Tip: Weak and Strong Forces

In combat, the left and right mouse buttons default to "basic" and "strong" attacks, respectively. As you can imagine, basic attacks are faster but do less damage. When you've got a bulky, heavy weapon such as a poleaxe, it's best to stay away from the heavy attacks unless your enemy is very slow.

Tip: Life is Pain

There's no point in letting a sweet, delicious soul go to waste. Get in the habit of gobbling them up as soon as your enemies fall, and you'll be less likely to die due to Raziel's constant health loss. Of course, if you're trying to power up the Soul Reaver, you've got to share.

Tip: Back and Forth We Go

In some situations you need to revisit areas you've already been through, so there is a certain amount of backtracking in this game. More significantly, however, is the fact that Raziel's quest takes him through time, to a dark past when his role in Kain's evil plan is truly revealed.

Tip: Face Me!

In combat, it helps to keep an eye on your enemy. Fortunately, you can choose to always face a given foe by holding the Face Enemy key (Default: Ctrl). It's much easier than trying to do it manually.
