Controls
MDK has the same basic controls as most first or third person shooters -- the direction keys and mouse are used for movement, aiming and firing your weapons. You can also play this game with a joystick or gamepad. The first level includes some tutorial instructions, though for the most part you'll learn by doing. Newcomers are advised to spend some time running around in the first level, to get used to the movement interface and the particulars of controlling Kurt.
Basics
MDK is a third-person action game in which you control Kurt Hectic, a janitor and reluctant hero who has taken on the job of saving the Earth. Our planet has been taken over by the Stream Rider aliens on the orders of their leader, Gunter Glut. Huge mining cities have been established to steal natural resources. Humanity faces its darkest hour -- it needs a janitor. The elegant combination of high action, goofball humor and clever strategy have kept players coming back to MDK year after year.
Sniping
One of the most important features of the Coil Suit is the helmet-mounted sniper rifle. Enter snipe mode by hitting the space bar. You can then zoom in and out and use a variety of ammunition to punish your enemies from afar. The camera windows located at the top of the screen in Sniper Mode track the trajectory of your shots so you can make minute corrections to aim as needed. Sniper Mode can also be used to hit switches and other targets that aren't reachable by normal means.
The Coil Suit
Dr. Hawkins is a bit crazy, but his inventions are ingenious. Kurt has embarked on his earth-saving adventure wearing the Coil Suit, a bulletproof (sort of), flying (er, falling with style), ultra-stylish (not really) weapon-packed (that one's true) piece of clothing. There's a chaingun mounted on your wrist, a high-powered sniper rifle built into your helmet and a retractable parachute useful for safe landings and gliding to distant platforms. That will beat alien tanks any day!
Tip: Airstrikes
Under certain circumstances you can call in a bombardment from the air, courtesy of Max the Robodog. It's a great way to destroy stubborn enemies.
Tip: The Dummy Decoy
This helpful little device can be used to distract the enemy so you can sneak by or blast them when they're not looking. It looks enough like Kurt that the aliens will chase it rather than you.
Tip: Be Tricky
Enemy AI in MDK is very advanced. Use it to your advantage. Injuring one enemy will trigger another to hurry over and help it. Similarly, enemies will investigate unusual sounds or seek cover when bombarded. Find ways to use their brains against them.
