Controls

Controls are simple and similar to the previous Magical Drop games. Use the direction keys to maneuver your character left and right around the playfield. One button pulls balloons down from the playfield, and another button throws them back. The goal is to line up three balloons of the same color in a vertical row to pop them and any other balloons of the same color they touch. A rarely-used Scroll button will cause the balloons to move down one row on your playfield.

Basics

Begin the game by selecting one or two players and then choosing a Tarot character to represent you. Two-player games are head-to-head matches to see who can pop the most balloons. In single player mode, you can choose to progress through the ladder of computer opponents in the Challenge mode, play an endless game in Puzzle mode, or begin your quest for the Magical Drop by selecting the Magical Journey mode.

Gameplay

If you match a set of balloons, then match another set before the first set has left the screen, you've begun a chain. Keep chains going as long as you can to send devastating cascades of balloons over to your opponent and send your score into the stratosphere.

Magical Journey Mode

Magical Drop 3 adds an adventure game-like single player style called Magical Journey. In this game type, you move your chosen character around a game board, stopping at areas of interest to do battle with opponents or collect items. There are a number of paths you can take across the board, with your ultimate objective being to beat your opponents to the Magical Drop at the end of the board.

Tip: Empty Balloons

Empty balloons look like soap bubbles. While you can't clear them by matching colors, you can throw any other balloon at the column they're in to pop them.

Tip: Fire Balloons

Fire Balloons are the only way to progress through Adventure Mode. Pop them as you would an empty balloon or pull them down to your character to collect them. The more you collect, the further on the play field you go. Be careful, though! If you wait too long and the flame flickers out, the balloon cools into an Ice Block.

Tip: Watch and Learn

As in previous versions of Magical Drop, the more chains that you pop in succession, the more balloons are added to your opponent's puzzle. Try to set up chain reactions, where balloons moving up after another group pops will in turn form chains of their own. Having trouble setting up chains? Watch the game without putting in a coin for a few minutes, and the attract mode will show the Fool in Puzzle mode making nearly 30 matches in a single chain as an example.

Tip: Super Bubble

Super Bubbles come in each of the four colors and a shining "wildcard" version. If you create a three-balloon chain that includes a Super Bubble, all balloons of that color will disappear. This is a great way to get out of a tight spot or eliminate balloons in your way. The clearing of balloons counts as a different match, so Super Bubbles are also great way to continue chains.

Tip: Ice Blocks

Ice blocks can't be pulled. Make a match near any ice block to turn all of the solid ice blocks onscreen to the color of that match. Colored ice blocks will break when any ice block onscreen is cleared, but will only turn to the color inside the ice.

Tip: Countdown Blocks

These blocks are indestructible, but will disappear after their counter reaches zero. Every time you create a chain, the number on every block on the field will decrease by the number of matches in the chain. When they reach zero, they clear out some of the balloons around them, continuing the chain, which in turn may clear other Countdown Blocks.
