Getting Started
At the title screen, press the controller up and down to select a play mode, then tap the jump button to confirm your choice. Some of the options available to you include Career Mode, Single Session, and Free Ride. Single Session lets you spend two minutes in the stage of your choice, and Free Ride lets you ride without any time limits at all. However, you'll want to start in the Career Mode to unlock all of the game's stages.
Characters
Once you've chosen a play mode, you'll be asked to pick a character. Press left and right on the controller to select one of the game's BMX racers, then push the jump button to lock in your choice. Next, you'll be given the chance to switch bike parts. Press left and right to highlight one of the parts, then up and down to choose a different one. New parts adjust your stats, improving one of your attributes while weakening another. Press jump when you're finished tweaking the bike.
Controls
When the stage begins, press left and right on the controller to steer your bike in those directions. Need to slow down or come to a stop? Hold down on the controller. Want to give yourself a boost in speed? Hold down the jump button and you'll pedal harder. When you release jump, you'll perform a bunny hop. Keep this basic trick in mind, you'll need it later when you want to dazzle the audience with the game's most impressive stunts!
Stages
Next comes the stage select screen. At the beginning of the game, you will only be granted access to the first stage. The remainder of the stages must be unlocked by finishing goals. Once you've unlocked the new stages, you can press left and right on the controller to select them, but for now, just press the jump button. You'll be taken to the indoor stunt park, where you'll begin your exciting career as a professional BMX rider!
Time
Each stage has five different goals, described to you before the stage begins. You'll have to complete goals to advance to new stages, and eventually finish the game. There's only one catch, though: you've got a two minute time limit! Once a goal is completed, it remains finished for the rest of the game, but if you're halfway through a mission when time expires and the buzzer rings, you'll have to start it over again!
Air Tricks
Now that you've taken off the training wheels, it's time to get serious! Ride toward a ramp or hill while holding down the jump button, then release it to send your bike skyward. While you're in the air, press the Quick Trick button along with any direction, or the Air Trick button along with any direction, to perform a trick. When you come back down from the jump, straighten out your front wheel by pressing left and right on the controller, or you're in for a nasty fall!
Ground Tricks
There's more to Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX than fancy aerial stunts! You can also perform manual tricks and grind tricks. While you're on the ground, press down, then up to do a manual. Press up and down to keep your balance, then tap the jump button when you're done. You can also grind rails and the edges of walls by jumping onto them and tapping the grind button. Press left and right to keep yourself from falling off your perch!
Tip: Something Special
There's a special meter on the top of the screen, just under your score. Performing tricks slowly fills up that meter, while falling off your bike completely empties it. Once the meter is full, you can perform high-scoring special moves by entering combinations of buttons, like down, down, and Air Trick for Mat Hoffman's Superman One-Hander.
Tip: Secrets Revealed
Some stages have hidden rooms inside them. Explore each stage thoroughly to find the triggers that will reveal these rooms.
Tip: Spin to Win
If you find yourself rolling backward, you can set yourself in the right direction with a tap of the jump button. You'll spin the bike in the opposite direction, which is must faster than coming to a full stop and turning around.
