Basics

You can move your battleship left and right across the bottom of the screen, while the invaders attack from above. Each type of invader follows its own unique approach pattern, and the key to success in Megamania depends chiefly on your ability to cope with their often erratic movements. You can shoot at the aliens using the fire button.

Game Types

There are two game types available, accessible with the select key. Type 1 allows you to steer your shots with the direction keys, and to release a continuous burst of missiles by holding down the fire button. Type 2 is more challenging, and does not allow this level of control over your firing pattern. Each game type can be set to support one player, or two players taking turns.

Energy

At the bottom of the screen, you’ll note the energy display. This meter fills up at the beginning of each attacking wave, and slowly counts down. If aliens still remain when your energy reaches zero, you lose a fighter. It’s best to defeat your enemies quickly, as you’re awarded bonus points based on the amount of energy remaining at the end of each attack. You earn an extra fighter every 10,000 points.

Winning

Once you’ve defeated all the alien waves, another attack begins -- the alien colors are different and their overall attack strategies are much more difficult. See how long you can hold out against wave after wave of increasingly challenging opponents.

Tip: Enemies

Megamania sports some of the most bizarre alien invaders imaginable. Each attacks in its own unique way.

Tip: Hamburgers

The humble Space Hamburger is your first attacker. Swarms of these enemies move left to right across the screen, creeping down toward you as they go. These enemies have a simple attack pattern and are most threatening if you lose track of the bombs they drop.

Tip: Cookies

Cookies have a much more erratic pattern of attack, moving rapidly left to right and down toward your fighter. Though they drop fewer bombs than the Hamburgers, the real danger when fighting the Cookies is that you’ll collide with one of them.

Tip: Bugs

These beings follow an attack pattern similar to that of the Hamburgers, but they move much faster. Watch out for the many bombs they drop!

Tip: Radial Tires

The Tire attackers follow an unusual symmetrical pattern of left/right movement as they approach you. Like the Cookies, Tires will vanish off the bottom of the screen and reappear at the top; you need to be careful to avoid colliding with them.

Tip: Diamonds

Moving left to right and then down at high speed, Diamonds are tricky because they’re so small and hard to hit. Though Diamonds will not descend to the level of your fighter like the other enemies, their speed and size make them challenging opponents.

Tip: Space Dice

Some Megamaniacs insist that the Space Dice are the easiest opponents in the game, but others find them intensely challenging. These attackers move vertically and at high speed, rarely shifting to the left or right. Theoretically it’s possible to simply park under a wave of them and hold down the fire button, but in practice it’s considerably more difficult.

Tip: Steam Irons

Steam Irons move vertically, in an almost straight line toward your fighter, then suddenly shift left or right. Despite the apparent simplicity of their approach, they’re surprisingly difficult to shoot down. Get as many as possible when they’re heading straight for you, and try to anticipate their sudden moves.

Tip: Bowties

These attackers move left to right at very high speed, and sometimes change direction without warning. Throughout their assault they will rain bombs down on your fighter, so you need to keep your eye on both the attackers themselves and their weaponry.
