Lives
You start the game with three lives. One life is lost when your soldier is nicked by a bullet, blown up in an explosion, falls into molten metal, is eaten by a giant moray eel... or is trampled by mutant crabs. Wow, it's hard to find something in this game that's NOT dangerous! Anyway, when you lose all your lives, just press the one player start button to continue. Press left and right to select one of the four heroes, then press fire to get back into the action!
Getting Started
Press the one player start button at the title screen. You'll be taken to the tutorial, where you'll be introduced to the basic gameplay of Metal Slug. When the tutorial ends, you'll advance to the character select screen. Press left and right on the controller to choose between one of the four available soldiers, then tap the fire button to confirm your choice. If you'd like to have a comrade-in-arms join you on your mission, press the two player start button.
Controls
When the game begins, press left and right on the controller to run in those directions. Press the jump button to leap into the air -- while you're there, press left and right to guide your soldier over pits and toward nearby platforms. Rapidly tap the fire button to fire your weapon, and tap the grenade button to fling grenades at your enemies. Remember, you have a limited supply of grenades, so put them to good use!
Powerups
You're going to need a lot of firepower to complete this mission! Luckily for you, powerups are scattered all over the place. You'll find them by breaking open boxes and rescuing hostages. Each power up has a gold or silver letter inside which indicates what weapon it will give you -- for instance, the gold L arms you with a laser beam that slices through enemy soldiers. Each power up has a limited supply of ammo, shown at the top of the screen.
Vehicles
The original Metal Slug only let you climb inside tanks, but there are all kinds of fly rides in Metal Slug 3! Anything with the word "IN" is fair game; just stand next to the vehicle and press the jump button to hop inside it. Vehicles provide protection from enemy attacks and offer greater firepower than going it alone. However, most vehicles can only take three hits before they explode. Press up and jump to escape your ride before it becomes a death trap!
Tip: Learning to Crawl
Crawling isn't just for dodging high-flying bullets! You can also crawl to access hidden areas: just stand next to the opening of a low-lying path, then hold down and left or right on the controller.
Tip: What's Your Status
Beware of status effects! Some enemies and even bonus items will change the way your character moves and fights. If you're struck with zombie vomit, for instance, you'll turn into a zombie yourself and become very slow, a condition that can only be reversed by collecting a medical pack.
