Gameplay

Pure action from start to finish, the story of Metal Slug 4 takes a back seat to the application of heavy firepower. Shoot anything that moves (and stuff that doesn't). If you don't shoot it, blow it up. Or both -- both is good. These are rules to live by in Metal Slug, and the game's hordes of enemies and challenging level bosses are the reason why. You'll find a variety of vehicles and special weapon powerups to keep things interesting, but don't be shy with the trigger no matter where you are.

Controls

A 2D scrolling shooter, Metal Slug 4 is a throwback to earlier days of simpler gameplay, but with more luxurious graphics and updated design. The controls are simple -- jump, shoot, melee attack and throw grenade are all you need to know -- but using them against the hordes of enemies you'll face is quite a challenge all the same. You can review a demonstration of how to play from the main menu. If you've played previous Metal Slug games, there's nothing new here.

Powerups

Throughout the game you'll encounter a variety of pickups, from new weapons and grenades to special items to prisoners of war. These POWs are especially important: if you can get them to the end of the level without losing a life, each one will confer a special bonus on your character, corresponding to the rank of the POW. As you experiment with the weapons you'll soon learn which ones you want and which you don't, but POWs and things that increase your score are always good.

Basics

Continuing the long-running and highly popular Metal Slug series, this game pits the Peregrine Falcons special ops force against Amadeus, a global terrorist organization bent on taking over the world's military computers. Blast your way in to Amadeus' lair and take out the terrorists before they can realize their plans. Pure run-and-gun action in the style of Contra and Ikari Warriors, Metal Slug 4 combines ten parts adrenaline and one part goofiness for an off-the-wall, ultraviolent experience.

Tip: Monkey Business

Watch out for scientists carrying dart guns -- getting shot with one turns you into an uzi-wielding monkey! Though you'll jump much higher and gain the ability to hold onto railings, you'll also move much slower and be unable to pick up weapons in this state.

Tip: Metalish

Watch for shield-shaped icons on the battlefield. Picking one up activates the Metalish System: kill as many enemies as possible while the timer counts down. When time's up, a huge bonus is added to your score, but only if you complete the current level without dying.

Tip: Slugs

"Slugs" are special vehicles that confer attack and defense bonuses on their drivers. Be sure to take advantage of them whenever you can -- they might make the difference between victory and defeat.

Tip: Vehicular Manslaughter

You can initiate a vehicle self-destruct sequence by hitting the melee attack button while you're in the driver's seat. Then hop out and find some cover -- that's a big explosion!
