Basics
Continuing the tradition of very mindless, very satisfying, very destructive run and gun gameplay of the beloved Metal Slug series, this installment introduces the Ptolemaic Army. These terrorists have stolen a disk containing plans for futuristic Metal Slugs, the advanced armored vehicles used by the Sparrows and the Peregrine Falcons, the world's top paramilitary teams. Now it's up to them to find the disk and defeat the enemy. To begin, select one of the four characters and get ready to go.
Controls
The Metal Slug games are incredibly simple to learn -- you jump, you shoot stuff, you blow stuff up, and you hit stuff with sticks and knives and other weapons. There is a brief demonstration of the controls if that seems intimidating, but most players won't have any difficulty figuring out what to do. During your adventure you'll find a variety of weapons, treasures and powerups that you can use to destroy not only the enemy, but pretty much everything in sight. Mindless violence? Sign me up!
Gameplay
The Ptolemaic Army has hordes of expendable soldiers -- like a zillion, maybe more -- and some of the deadliest war machines on the planet. And they've stolen schematics for advanced Metal Slugs, which are like rolling (or hopping, swimming, flying, whatever) engines of destruction. It's pure action from start to finish, but there's also strategy in which weapons and Slugs you prefer. This is a straight up "move forward while shooting" kind of game, and none do it better than the Slug series.
Slugs
Take a vehicle. Glue on thirty tons of armor. Attach enough firepower to flatten a medium-sized nation. Add a couple more guns. And some more armor. That's a Slug, and your team knows exactly how best to use them. There are seven Slugs in the game, each suited for a different sort of carnage, but they're always better than going in on foot, so you should take advantage of them whenever they become available. Unfortunately, the bad guys have Slugs now too, so it's going to be a challenge.
Tip: Slide
Metal Slug 5 introduces a new move -- the slide, which is perfect for dodging attacks and zipping up close to an enemy for a melee hit. Press down while pushing jump to execute a slide. You can even fire your gun while sliding!
Tip: Bosses
At the end of each stage you'll face an enormous war machine that's got more firepower than your average navy. These guys take a lot of punishment before going down, but there's usually also some trick to defeating them. Watch their behavior carefully.
Tip: Hostages
Occasionally you'll see innocents and POWs that have been taken prisoner by the Ptolemaic Army. Grab them and then finish the level without losing a life to earn special bonuses.
Tip: Shielded Enemies
Some enemies come with armor that protects them from frontal attacks, making it either hard or impossible to damage them from this direction. Grenades and aerial assaults are useful against these foes.
