Getting Started
Press the one player start button at the title screen to advance to the tutorial. This will give you a brief run-down of the game's controls, but you can skip it by pressing the fire button. Once the tutorial is finished, the game will begin with your soldier parachuting deep into enemy territory. If you'd like a friend to join you in your mission to bring down the scheming General Mordern, just press the two player start button!
Controls
After you touch down, press left and right on the controller to run in those directions. Tap the jump button and you'll leap into the air, helping you reach high platforms. Rapidly tap the fire button to fire your gun -- you can also press up or down while firing to aim at high or low targets. Finally, you can lob explosive grenades at the soldiers coming your way by pressing the grenade button. Just don't go overboard with them, because you have a limited supply!
Lives
You begin the game with three lives. You'll lose a life every time you're attacked by a soldier, crushed under the treads of a tank, blasted with a cannon, blown up in an explosion, drowned in deep water...there are a lot of ways to fall in battle, and you'll probably discover them all first-hand! Anyway, if you lose all three of your lives, you can always continue the game by pressing start before the timer on the continue screen counts down to zero.
Powerups
Sometimes your hand gun isn't enough to take down the waves of soldiers in your path. Fortunately, there are power ups which can supply you with more potent weaponry. Tap the fire button when standing next to a box or a prisoner of war, and you'll use your knife to either break the box or free the prisoner from his ropes. Your reward is a powerup which will temporarily arm you with a flame thrower, a missile launchers, or another heavy-duty weapon.
Metal Slug
A war just isn't a war without a tank! Luckily, there are several waiting for you on the battlefield. These armored vehicles, known as Metal Slugs, are marked with the word "IN". Press jump while standing next to a Slug and you'll hop inside it. There are several advantages to riding inside a Metal Slug: it's resistant to damage, and the cannon is more powerful and accurate than any other weapon in the game. However, if you do need to get out of a Slug, just hold up while pressing jump.
Tip: Kamikaze Attack
You can use the Metal Slug as a battering ram by pressing the jump and run buttons together while riding inside it. However, the tank won't survive this attack, so use it as a last resort!
Tip: Winner Take All
Practically everything that moves in Metal Slug will kill you, but nearly everything that DOESN'T will earn you points. This includes bread, love letters, frogs, cans of spinach, gold coins, snakes, and even piles of poo! The value of the item depends on its rarity in the game and its practical use in real life (so don't expect a big score from that last one).
Tip: Nowhere to Hide
There are several prisoners of war in plain sight, but also some that are hidden from view. Shoot any suspicious scenery (like the bushes in the second mission, just before the tank on rails) to shake the hostages loose from their hiding places.
Tip: Stayin' Alive
If you're working toward a high score, it's important that you never lose a single life. Any prisoners of war you find in each mission will award you a hefty point bonus, but you'll lose them all if your soldier dies before the mission is complete!
