Controls
When the game starts, Mr. Driller drops from the top of the screen onto a huge stack of colored blocks. Press left or right to move Mr. Driller in those directions. Press the drill button in conjunction with any direction to drill in that direction. Your goal is to reach the bottom of the stack of colored blocks by drilling through them. Beware, though...blocks often act as supports for other blocks looming overhead. When you destroy these keystones, the blocks they were supporting will fall, threatening to crush you.
Getting Started
Press the start button at the title screen. A menu screen appears, with five options printed on a ring of bubbles. Press left or right to rotate the ring and select one of the options, then the drill button to confirm your choice. The options available are the standard Arcade Mode, the neverending Survival Mode, Time Attack Mode, High Scores, and Options.
Arcade Mode
When you select the arcade mode, you'll be asked to choose from two different challenges. The 2500ft challenge is the easier of the two, with the least amount of ground to cover. The 5000ft challenge is more difficult, and is recommended for seasoned Mr. Driller players. Press left or right to choose your challenge, then press the drill button to begin the game.
Techniques
Any blocks that touch like-colored blocks will bond together, forming shelves which protect you from being crushed. When a block is dropped onto three or more like-colored blocks, every block in the group vanishes. Drill strategically to remove large quantities of blocks quickly, and to protect yourself from the threat of being squashed!
Oxygen
Mr. Driller is given a limited supply of oxygen which depletes as time expires. Capsules filled with liquid oxygen can sometimes be found in the stack of blocks. Collect these capsules to boost your supply of oxygen and keep Mr. Driller healthy. Also, avoid drilling into the chocolate blocks if possible...these take repeated strikes from your drill to break and will leave Mr. Driller exhausted, quickly depleting his oxygen.
Tip: Get Movin'!
Don't stop to think...just drill! If you wait around, you're probably going to get squashed by falling blocks.
Tip: Combo Blocks
In the later stages, oxygen capsules are often protected by a wall of chocolate blocks. Drill around to find other chocolate blocks you can drop on the group, making them all vanish. Now you can collect the capsules without wasting any of your oxygen drilling through the chocolate blocks!
