Basics
Welcome to Outpost Kaloki, a supremely silly space station simulator! With zany aliens on the go from starport to starport, you're hoping to make your fortune as a station tycoon. It's sort of like managing a mall, except some of your visitors have tentacles. But as manager, you have to juggle construction and expansion with the wishes of your visitors, not to mention the bottom line, access to power, and whatever special orders you may receive. Being a tycoon is no easier in space than on land!
Construction
The first thing to master in Outpost Kaloki is the construction interface. A basic space station is just a central core surrounded by spike-like pylons that support expansion modules. Hotels, restaurants, laboratory facilities and more end up attached to the pylons. Just double-click one of the pylons to bring up the build menu, then select the structure you want to add and click Build. Each station in the game has limited expansion capability, so build carefully.
Money & Power
As you expand and attract more visitors to your station, keep an eye on available funds and power in the upper right interface. The money is not only your profit, but how much you have to buy new additions. Power is gathered by a variety of structures and stored on board the station. Each expansion has a power requirement to build, and also a maintenance requirement that drains your reserves over time. You must maintain a positive balance of these assets to succeed!
Visitor Management
Everything from alien truckers to beautiful space princesses will visit your bustling ports, and you've got to keep them happy. Visitors are looking for different things: work, information, a place to eat or sleep, and so forth. The key is to build the correct balance of expansions. Understand, though, that not every station can have exactly what everyone wants all the time. Rather than being all things to all peop- well, all aliens, set a long-term goal and stick with that.
Play Types
Outpost Kaloki has two basic types of play: choose "Play" from the main menu to begin the campaign game, which includes a tutorial at the beginning and will guide you through more than a dozen increasingly challenging missions. Choose "Scenario" from the menu to play open-ended, single-level missions that usually either task you with a very specific challenge, or are simple free sandbox missions that allow you to play as you like.
Tip: Bottom Line it for Me
You can double-click on any functioning expansion to bring up a menu of additional information and options about it, including the ability to repair or sell the facility, and set certain parameters for its profitability, productivity and safety.
Tip: Belly Up to the Bar
Keep an eye on the constantly-changing info bar at the bottom of the screen. This useful tool tracks all recent traffic at the station, and includes icons to indicate whether the visitor is happy or sad. Sometimes special visitors will want to speak with you directly. You can click any ship on the bar for a close-up of its location.
Tip: Lost in Space
Even in some early missions, it's comparatively easy to render the level unwinnable by building the wrong items first. Remember that you start most missions with a reserve of cash and power, so spend your starting capital on expansions that will increase them further before you worry about mission objectives.
Tip: High-Class
The blinking dots on the upper left of the build screen indicate the "quality" of the expansion you're choosing -- higher quality expansions cost more, but generally net more in return. As with buying the wrong thing, you can really put yourself in the hole if you buy great stuff too soon. Expand slowly, starting with basic facilities.
