Getting Started

When the game begins, you'll be prompted to adjust the contrast and brightness on your monitor until the box on the bottom of the screen displays a faint image. Once it appears, move the cursor over OK and click the left mouse button to proceed. The main menu appears. Move the cursor over New Game, then click the left mouse button. Finally, click a difficulty level. After a brief introductory sequence, the game will begin.

Movement

You'll find yourself in a small, cramped room when the game begins. Press the W and S keys to walk forward and backward, and press the A and D keys to walk left and right. Look around by moving the mouse in any direction. When you see an object you would like to examine, move the mouse until the object is in the center of the screen and an eye icon appears. Click the right mouse button to bring up a brief description of the object, then click it again to resume the game.

Items

You can add objects to your inventory and move others with the left mouse button. Move the mouse until the object is in the center of the screen and a hand icon appears. Next, tap the left mouse button to add the object to your inventory. Alternately, you can move objects by holding down the left mouse button and moving the mouse in any direction. Release the left mouse button to let go of the object, or press the right mouse button to throw it.

Inventory

Accessing your inventory is as simple as pressing the Tab key. When the inventory screen appears, move the cursor over the object you would like to equip, then hold down the left mouse button and drag the object to one of the numbered squares at the top of the screen. Press Tab once again to return to the game. Now, you can quickly access the item you've equipped by pressing the number key (1, 2, 3, etc.) assigned to that item.

Combat

Hidden threats lurk everywhere, and you'll need to defend yourself from them. First equip a weapon like the hammer, then press the number key to put it in your hands. Next, hold down the left mouse button and drag the mouse to the left or right to swing the weapon in either direction. Bring down the enemy quickly, because if he strikes you first, you'll take damage. Take too much damage and you'll die, forcing you to resume the game from a save point.

Saving

Your journey is very long, so you'll want to save your progress regularly. Sometimes the game will handle this for you: when you see a bright orange flash, your progress has been automatically saved. However, you will also want to save manually, using the artifacts hidden in some areas. First find an artifact, then click it with the left mouse button. Now you can take a break and return to the game, knowing that your efforts will not have been in vain!

Tip: Collect Them All

Be a pack rat! Search each area for objects, and collect as many as you can find. You'll never know when you'll need the items later.

Tip: Give 'Em A Hand

Penumbra Overture requires you to interact with objects as though they existed in real life. For instance, to open a hatch, put the hand icon over the hatch lock and move the mouse in a circular motion to twist it open. Finally, put the hand icon on the bottom of the hatch and slide the mouse up to lift the hatch open.
