Gameplay
In Phantasy Star II, you and your comrades will visit many towns, explore enormous dungeons, and battle a plethora of fearsome creatures. In the overworld map, you and your party will be able to talk to townspeople, buy items from shops, heal your wounds and so on. In dungeons, you will fight many adversaries while collecting treasure and solving puzzles.
Controls
Phantasy Star II is a classic Role-Playing Game (RPG) and thus has a fairly complicated control system. Fortunately, the basic commands can be distilled into three essentials: accept, cancel and action. Using an accept command allows you to talk to townsfolk, progress through dialogue boxes, or confirm a choice in battle. The cancel command does just the opposite. The action command allows you to inspect your environment or navigate selection boxes.
Characters
As Phantasy Star's story unfolds, new characters will join you on your quest. The first is Nei, your longtime friend. Each character has strengths and weaknesses, but as you level up you can customize their attributes to your liking.
Powering Up
The essence of any RPG involves the development of your characters as you progress, and Phantasy Star II is no different. You can spend hours "leveling up" your characters to gain experience, weapons and new abilities.
Tip: Level Up
Patience is a virtue, and it’s a prime requisite for beating Phantasy Star II. The monsters start off difficult and only get tougher and more powerful as the game progresses. To counter their seemingly infinite strength, you’ll need good equipment and to spend a lot of time leveling up your party.
Tip: Get A Party Started
Party order matters a lot -- the closer a character is to the front of the party, the more likely he or she is to be hit when a monster takes a swing. Putting heavily armored characters with lots of hit points up front lets physically weaker characters live longer.
Tip: Characters
Every party member has his or her own strengths and weaknesses. Some are great physical fighters, such as Nei or Rudo, while others, like Hugh and Amy, are powerful healers. Others, such as Kain the robot fighter, are good at dealing with monsters of specific types. Be mindful of a character’s powers and alter your party to suit your needs.
Tip: Nothing Unusual
Use this cheat to avoid random encounters: When examining the nearby area with the action command, the next step you take is guaranteed not to take you into a battle. Keep hitting the action command while you walk, so that after every step it will say ''There seems to be nothing unusual here.'' As long as you do so, no random encounters will happen, but it will take quite a while to maneuver through dungeons this way.
