Basics
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is a 3D action game that calls for tremendous precision, timing and cleverness. An evil Vizier has tricked the Prince into releasing the Sands of Time, and now you must find a way to contain them again before it's too late. The terrain and the monsters are both deadly enemies in this puzzle-riddled stronghold, but luckily the Prince too has some control over time -- a power you will need if you hope to defeat the evil that lurks here.
Controls
The Prince boasts some truly amazing acrobatic skills, and is a deadly warrior. He can run along walls, cling to hairsbreadth ledges and climb to treacherous heights with ease. The controls are quite simple: the direction keys and mouse to move the Prince and guide him through the palace's many rooms. Tutorial information will appear throughout the early stages of the game to educate you on the Prince's moves and capabilities. You can also reassign keys however you like in the options menu.
The Sands of Time
The Sands have been unleashed from a magical hourglass and will destroy the world if they're not put back. The Prince, meanwhile, has stolen a dagger that also contains Sand -- and thereby allows you some control over the passage of time. You must keep the dagger "full" of Sand by using it to finish your enemies. It has the power to rewind time to undo a mistake, slow it to a crawl and perform a variety of other feats. The tutorial offers many pointers on how to use the dagger to your advantage.
Combat
The humans in the palace have been turned into mindless killers by the Sands of Time. The Prince is spared thanks to his magic dagger, but he must face terrifying abominations as he picks his way through the collapsing fortress. The tutorial information will also help you with combat, but in that practice makes perfect. The mouse buttons control your attacks and parries, and as you grow used to the surprisingly simple interface you'll soon be pulling off devastating acrobatic combos with ease.
Puzzles
This game is basically a series of acrobatic jumping puzzles, but don't let that turn you off. Each scene is so devilishly clever and the solutions are so thrilling that you will never feel frustrated. The palace is coming apart, so getting from A to B isn't necessarily easy. The simple tutorial puzzles will prepare you for the fiendishly difficult ones you encounter at the end. In many cases some really complex gymnastics are necessary, so mastering the Prince's controls are a must.
Sand Whorls
Every now and then you'll encounter a vortex of swirling Sand. The released Sands have destabilized time, allowing you to leave moments frozen behind you. These Sand Whorls are the save points in the game (you can't save wherever you like, only at Sand Whorls). More importantly, entering a Sand Whorl affords you a glimpse into the future, which can be enormously helpful in figuring out upcoming puzzles. Take advantage of Sand Whorls whenever you find them.
Tip: Alternate Views
A new perspective can shed light on a fiendish puzzle. You can change the view to first person (default key: F) or a farther-back "wide shot" (default: Q) of an area, which may reveal some clues you can't otherwise see. You can only look, not play, in these view modes -- but it can be enough.
Tip: Gaining Life
Be on the lookout for hidden corners. Throughout the game, partially concealed entrances to another world grant access to a lifegiving fountain that permanently increases the Prince's hit points when he takes a drink.
Tip: Getting Sand
Sand Zombies cannot be killed with regular weapons. If you knock them down they just get back up again -- you must steal the Sand that fuels them. When one falls down, strike him with your dagger (default: middle mouse button) to take his Sand.
Tip: Healing
You can restore lost hit points whenever you drink fresh water -- even during combat. Fountains and puddles abound, so take advantage of them by approaching and clicking the right mouse button.
