Each case has a time limit, shown at the top of the screen. When the timer reaches zero, Henri La Fiend makes a clean getaway, and the case becomes an unsolved mystery. It's important to find every piece of evidence and return it as quickly as possible, but not so quickly that you become careless and run into La Fiend's sticky-fingered accomplices. If you can solve the case before time expires, you've won the game!
Press the Select button to choose between the game's five available cases. Each case is more difficult than the last. Start out with the first case if you're new to the game, or if you want to take on a marathon challenge, select the fifth case which combines goals from the previous four. Once you've made your choice, press the Reset button to begin your pursuit of the nefarious Henri Le Fiend!
Pierre Touche appears in the center of the screen, riding a car straight out of the 1940's. Press the controller left and right to move the jalopy in those directions. You can also move between streets by pressing up or down when he reaches an intersection. Finally, press the jump button to activate your car's hydraulics and launch Pierre Touche into the air. The detective stays aloft much longer than the car, so keep this in mind when you're about to jump.
There are three steps to cracking each case. First, you'll need to find evidence, then return it to the building of its origin. Next, you'll need to locate the stolen merchandise and return it to its rightful owners. Henri La Fiend is your final target: collar him and return him to police headquarters, and the case is solved! When you find any of these items, jump to snatch it from the air, then think of the most logical place to take it and drive to that building.
As you drive through the town and the nearby forest, you'll face a variety of hazards. Birds, rats, pot holes, and La Fiend's hired goons will all slow you down and steal your points if you collide with them, so drive carefully! Some of La Fiend's men can be interrogated for information on the whereabouts of items: jump for them when they peek outside their windows to catch them. Other, better armed crooks will only hinder you, and try to swipe any items you've collected so far.
Remember that both Pierre and his car are vulnerable to attack. If you manage to leap the car over a pothole, but Pierre hits a bird on his way up, you'll still lose points.
Learn the location of each item. Each piece of evidence and stolen merchandise will always appear in the same areas. You'll also find every building in the same location, regardless of the case.
