Merit Badges

As Raz completes his training, he'll earn Merit Badges. These badges aren't just objects of pride, they're licenses allowing Raz to use new psychic powers. One of the first badges you'll earn is PSI Blast, a bolt of energy used to attack foes. There are many more powers to unlock, both by completing stages in the story or by increasing your PSI Rank.

Getting Started

The first time you play Psychonauts, after the introduction video, you'll be prompted to select a "bunk", or system file to save your data. Enter your name when prompted to begin the game. If you've previously played a game, Raz will appear on top of the giant "Psychonauts" brain logo on the title screen. Move him around to find the New Game, Load Game, and Continue doors to restart where you left off.

Basics

Raz has snuck into Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp and managed to convince the staff to let him stay -- until his parents come to pick him up, at least. So Raz takes it upon himself to complete the Psychonauts training and become a full-fledged agent within the, oh, day or two it'll take for his parents to come get him. Your first step is Basic Braining, led by Coach Oleander, which will teach you some basic techniques.

Basic Braining

The game is divided into stages -- the hub is the "real world", in the Whispering Rock campgrounds. Other levels are found by entering the minds of other people and exploring their mental landscape. Your first experience is the military Coach Oleander, whose mind looks like a blasted war zone. It's here that you'll be taught many techniques that will serve you well over the course of the game.

Controls

Move with the WASD or arrow keys. Move the mouse to look around. Jump by pressing the Spacebar, and press the Spacebar again to give Raz a psychically-boosted double-jump. Attack by clicking the mouse button. Interact with objects or talk to fellow campers with the F key.

Tip: PSI Rank

Your PSI Rank grows independently of story events, but it's a good idea to get it as high as you can. As your PSI Rank grows, you'll learn new psychic powers and improve the powers you've already learned. Collect Psi-Cards and Psi-Cores in the campgrounds and look for Figments and Emotional Baggage within minds to increase your rank.

Tip: Brain Tumbler

After you've entered a mind, it becomes available via the "Collective Unconscious", allowing you to return later to pick up any Figments, Cobwebs, or Baggage you may have missed the first time. Access the Collective Unconscious through the Brain Tumbler in Sasha Nein's "Secret" lab.
