Controls
If you've played any other Putt-Putt games, the controls will be very familiar to you. Since this game is designed to be played by young kids without parental supervision, the entire interface is very intuitive. Move the mouse cursor around the screen and left click objects or characters to interact with them. The dashboard at the bottom of the screen provides access to game options and Putt-Putt's inventory, which you can use by clicking an item and then clicking its target in the game world.
Basics
Putt-Putt Travels Through Time is a fun, educational adventure for young players between the ages of three and eight. You must help Putt-Putt, the lovable purple convertible, find his friend Pep by searching through four unique time zones. Along with Pep, many of Putt-Putt's school supplies and some of his homework are also scattered through history. This game encourages players to think logically, work with characters they encounter, learn about history and solve challenging puzzles.
Puzzles
Putt-Putt Travels Through Time helps young players learn basic math and reading skills, along with teamwork concepts, interaction with others, creative thinking and logic. The tasks and puzzles that Putt-Putt faces are designed to be challenging without becoming frustrating for younger players, and you are free to approach the game challenges in whatever order you like -- even switch time zones right in the middle of a game to check out a new area. The key to doing well is thorough exploration.
Time Travel
Once Putt-Putt enters Dr. Firebird's time machine, he can choose which of the four time zones he wants to start with. Each one presents unique puzzles and challenges, plus some very goofy characters who might be willing to help Putt-Putt on his quest. Each time zone contains some of Putt-Putt's school supplies or homework, and Pep the dog is also hidden in one of them. Items are placed randomly with each game, so players can enjoy a new challenge every time.
Tip: Encounters
Make a point to speak with all the characters you encounter. Some may know important clues about where Pep or Putt-Putt's school supplies are hidden, while others will be willing to help you if you do them a favor or beat them at a challenge.
Tip: Click Everything!
Nearly everything in the game world will react when you left-click it, so be sure to explore thoroughly. Also, many items and characters react differently when you click them multiple times.
Tip: Revisiting Areas
Sometimes it helps to go back to areas you've already visited, especially if you've picked up a new item or clue. Your new object or information may help you solve puzzles you couldn't solve before!
Tip: Think Creatively
The challenges in this game aren't very difficult, but often you have to think about them in unique or creative ways. If something has you stumped, reconsider the problem from another angle.
Tip: Saving
If you need to leave your game for a while, click the [s] button to save your progress. When you restart later, you can press the [l] button to load your previous game and pick up where you left off.
