Enemies

The Qix has an uncanny sense for where you are and where you're going, and if it touches your cursor or any part of the line you draw, you lose a life. Also plaguing you are Sparx, which travel along borders and lines you've already drawn. If your cursor touches a Sparx, you lose a life. Take too long to draw your line and a Fuse will start burning up the unfinished edge. If the Fuse reaches your cursor before you finish the box…well, you get the idea.

Drawing

You control a cursor that draws a thin line that becomes solid when it connects on both ends with the edge of the screen or other solid boxes that connect to edge. Depending on the button you press, you can draw either quickly or slowly. Quick boxes leave you exposed to danger for a shorter time, but the risk of drawing slowly doubles the points you get for the box.

Basics

The Qix is a wand that waves around the center of the screen. It cannot hurt you as long as you are on an edge-either the edge of the screen or the edge of a filled-in box of your creation. Your job is to trap the Qix by filling in 75 percent of the screen with solid boxes. Don’t stop at 75 percent, though. You get big bonuses for everything you capture above the three-quarters mark.

Tip: Spiral Deathtrap

One of the great dangers in Qix is creating “spiral deathtrap.” The term refers to players trapping themselves by creating a spiral from which they cannot escape. This generally happens when the Qix blocks them as they try to cross the screen. The general tendency is to try and go back the way you came, get trapped in your own path, and eventually be destroyed by a spark.

Tip: Qix in a Box

Qix is a game for the patient. The way to score is to draw crevices, wait for the Qix to enter one, then seal it quickly. As you wait, keep an eye out for sparks.
